Location Edit > Impact of moving Gym into different S17 & S14 cell

I have discovered that one of the wayspots in a local park is in the wrong location. It is supposed to be for some outdoor gym equipment at the edge of the park, but the wayspot has been pinned about 30 metres to the south of where the gym equipment is. The S14 cell it belongs to (Cell A) contains 20 pokestops and 3 gyms, of which this wayspot is one of the gyms.

If I request a help chat location edit to move the wayspot to the correct location, if accepted, it would move into an unoccupied S17 cell in the S14 cell (Cell B) to the north. Cell B contains 17 pokestops and 3 gyms.

Am I correct in thinking that under the above circumstances, the outdoor gym wayspot would become a pokestop, due to there already being 3 gyms present in Cell B? And would one of the other pokestops in Cell A be converted into a gym to replace the relocated gym, due to there still being 20 pokestops and 2 gyms in Cell A?

A further question is, if I am right about the gym conversion to a pokestop, is there any risk to anyones pokemon that have been placed in the gym at the point when the move occurs? I would absolutely hate to see my actions result in anyone losing their pokemon.

I hope I have explained myself clearly enough!

Niantic never acknowledge s2 cells so we cant tell for certain. I think Its possible that your scenario will happen but make sure to use wayfarer map to check all this. Alternately edit location to manipulate gameboard can be seen as abuse so only do it for wayspot correction despite its status as gym/pokestop.

It is really tough to predict exactly what will happen when gyms are location edited across L14 cell lines. I would encourage you to make the move if it is a genuine real life correction of the physical location, and let Niantic’s algorithms do what they will.

IF the gym reverts to a Pokestop, the Pokemon in the gym should go back to their owners. If for some reason they don’t, I think you could ask here in the Bug Reports & Technical Support for staff to reinforce the density and inclusion rules.

Thanks both. You can see the discrepancy on the Wayfarer map. I have highlighted the location of the outdoor gym equipment, which is in the cover photo of the wayspot, with the wayspot location being further south.

Let us know what happens, please.

I hadn’t got round to doing anything about this yet, but yesterday the wayspot relocated and turned into a pokestop, so someone else must have taken it upon themselves to sort it out. Thank you - saves me a job!

The Wayfarer map has caught up today:

The replacement gym is one of the football pitches in the same recreation area:

I’ve not heard any reports of trainers losing pokemon from the downgraded gym.

It takes a few days I believe for the Pokémon to return.
