Looking for clarification on a nomination that resulted in both a warning and conflicting rejection reasons

Hello everyone,

I am looking for clarification regarding a nomination that has left me quite confused about what exactly went wrong and how I should improve future submissions.

The nomination was for a local business called “Mini Market 32 Τρυπιά” in Pefki, Greece.

The storefront sign itself displays the name “ΜΙΝΙ ΜΑΡΚΕΤ 32 ΤΡΥΠΙΑ”, and my nomination title was “Mini Market Τρυπια 32”.

What happened

The nomination was initially rejected, and one of the rejection reasons provided was:

“The text or photo contains abuse, ridicule, or harassment of a specific person or group.”

This surprised me because:

  • The title was based on the actual business sign.
  • The photos only showed the storefront and signage.
  • The description contained factual information only.
  • The word “Τρυπιά” is not an insult or offensive term in this context. It is the local place/street name and can be found on map services for the area.

Because of this rejection reason, I believed there may have been a misunderstanding or an automated interpretation of the business name.

Warning Received

Some time later I received an email from Wayfarer Support stating that my nomination had been submitted away from its actual location and that this constituted a policy violation.

The nomination pin had been placed at the public entrance/frontage area where the business sign is located, rather than deep inside the building footprint. I did not intentionally place the pin incorrectly and submitted it in good faith.

As a result, I received my first warning on my account.

BELOW AN EXPLAING PHOTO FROM GOOGLE MAPS:

Appeal Outcome

I later appealed the nomination.

The appeal response mentioned abuse, harassment, or inappropriate content appeared once more (The text or photo contains abuse, ridicule, or harassment of a specific person or group) and also added the below:

“We cannot verify how this business is significant to your community.”

and suggested that I provide more information regarding the business’s importance to the local community.

This left me confused because the appeal appeared to focus on community significance, while the original rejection reasons included abuse/harassment, and the separate warning focused on location placement.

Why I am posting

I am not posting to argue that the nomination should automatically be accepted.

I am genuinely trying to understand:

  1. Why a business name that matches the real storefront sign could trigger a harassment-related rejection reason.
  2. Whether the word “Τρυπιά” may have been misinterpreted by automated systems despite being a legitimate local place name.
  3. Whether placing a pin at a public entrance/frontage area rather than directly on the building footprint can result in a misplacement warning.
  4. How contributors should interpret cases where the rejection reasons, warning reason, and appeal reasoning all appear to be different.

One reason I found the outcome difficult to understand is that this business provides tangible day-to-day value to the local community. It serves nearby residents, offers deliveries to elderly people, and acts as a parcel collection point for courier services.

While I understand that eligibility is not determined solely by usefulness, I struggled to reconcile the rejection reasoning with the fact that many existing Wayspots are based on decorative features or points of visual interest that may have less direct community impact than a long-standing neighborhood business that residents actively use and rely upon.

This is part of why I am seeking clarification on how community significance is evaluated in practice.

I would appreciate any feedback from experienced reviewers or Wayfarer staff, as I want to contribute accurately and avoid making similar mistakes in the future.

Thank you for your time.

Welcome!

In most case this rejection reason is because of abuse not ridicule or harrasment. Can you share full screenshot of your nomination? Its hard to comment without seeing the whole nomination.

Are you sure this is warning? The warning email will look like this

If you got warning notice, you will have pop out notification EVERYTIME you login

You shouldnt use existing wayspot as basis for submission. Always refer to wayfarer criteria (exploration, exercise, socialize)

  1. Its probably not about harrasement but abuse about missplacement of wayspot submission
  2. Same as 1
  3. Missplacement of wayspot submission is subject to abuse ladder system. Especially if missplacement is intended to manipulate game board (i dont know what happened here, just stating possibility)
  4. I need to see rejection reason and rejected appeal reason to comment further because it could be just missunderstanding.

Thank you for taking the time to assist.
Below the photos of my nomination including the appeal as well as the email i received.

I can confirm I was receiving a notice every time i was loging in for 24 hours (cant find the screenshots)

Finally im not comparing with excisting wayspots, but im trying to understand as according to me (and only me) my nomination is great for exploration (in the content of it is a local company) and for socialize. I only did this comment as i see random cafes and street art and though that my nomination will be ‘‘stronger’’ than these.

Is it possible to check your email and share the coordinate ? It seems your nomination got flagged because missplacement of wayspot submission.

The rejection reason lump multiple rejection clause together so its confusing but i believe its rejected because staff think abuse is detected.

(38.055258, 23.788327) i pinned at the point this sign is placed. Its not very easy to pin at the exact point

It seems the placement is a bit off. Although last time i check, both coordinate is in same cell. You can appeal this imho, try to explain to staff how this happened.

How do i do this? I arleady appealed and was rejected as per my screenshot.

In the email sent to you, you should have link to appeal. Please know that this is 1st strike from abuse ladder system . More detail can be seen below

First of all, from what i saw, what you appeal is your nomination. It result in this rejected appeal (“We cannot verify how this business is significant to your community.”)

The strike /warning is another matter entirely. Usually it happened because someone report them during review.

I sent an email as well but this was their responce.

Since then i havent nominated anything else in fear of a 30 days strike

Yea. Sorry i miss that email was from staff.

I just realize that this happened in october 2025.

Anyway you have 1 year redemption period where you will have all strike gone after 1 year of clean record.

In future , try to use check satelite view when submitting . Its good tool to check your pin placement.

My initial nomination was in October of 2025. My appeal on the nomination happened a few days ago. I have 4 months to goo since nominating again. Also I have no clue what to do with this nominaation

I didnt comment about the nomination before because i am more concerned about your strike. Personally i am not too convinced that the market fit wayfarer criteria. You are free to resubmit and try getting more information about the market. Personally in general, if i believe certain nomination fulfil wayfarer criteria, i will resubmit them once. If it still got rejected by appeal, i will let it go (this is especially true for borderline submission).

So you believe there is nothing more I can do or contact them directly.

Just to wait till strike is waved and resubmit it…

Since you already appeal your warning email and got reply from staff, i dont think there is much you can do unless you have new thing to say to staff. You can try send another appeal or wait staff here to DM you

Hope some of the staff here sees it and DM me.

Thank you very much for your time my friend.

Here are the only options we have when reviewing and flagging a nomination for abuse. None fit this situation very well so we often choose the top basic “abuse” one. This probably results in the message you got on the email.

That location mismatch is pretty minor and personally I would not hit abuse. I would have moved the pin during review (we have this option) or rejected for accuracy and chosen “inaccurate location” as the reason.

Hopefully in the future we will be able to pick an option titled “other abuse reasons”

This is not the submission you were warned for. Please verify the information before you post it publicly.

Your warning is related to another nomination for the same object which was submitted at 38.055551,23.788436.

Thank you for the clarification and for taking the time to review the case.

I accept responsibility for that mistake. The incorrect placement was not intentional, but I understand why Niantic took action and I appreciate the clarification.

Part of my confusion came from trying to reconcile the warning with the rejection reasons that were displayed for the nomination. Since the business itself is genuine and the title was based directly on the storefront sign, I initially focused on the possibility that the issue was related to the title or wording rather than the pin location (as I was sure i pinned it at the sign).

The point I am still trying to understand is the rejection reason:

“The text or photo contains abuse, ridicule, or harassment of a specific person or group.”

The title was based on the actual business sign, the photographs showed the storefront, and the nomination text contained only factual information. Because of this, I was unable to identify any content that could reasonably be interpreted as abusive or harassing.

One forum member suggested that this rejection reason may sometimes be associated with inaccurate location placement or nomination abuse rather than the literal text or photographs themselves.

If that interpretation is correct, it would explain why I was unable to find any problematic content within the nomination itself.

I would appreciate any clarification from Niantic regarding whether an inaccurate pin placement can contribute to this rejection reason, as understanding this would help me avoid similar mistakes in the future and better understand how the review system communicates nomination issues.

Thank you again to both Niantic and the community members who helped clarify the situation.

This is just the way the text reads when abuse is flagged. It is very badly worded. I hope they will change it. The two reasons we see most often for this flag to come up is for third party photos or for mislocated pins.

@niktero has already shown where this wording comes from: Looking for clarification on a nomination that resulted in both a warning and conflicting rejection reasons - #17 by niktero
