New gym in unfair location

I don’t really know where to ask this so posting this here.
After adding pokestops we’ve hit the number for a third gym. It just appeared and its in beween two other ones right on top of the s14 cell.
It feels kinda unfair considering there were already two you could play without moving but now there is a third right in between.
Can i appeal this placement? I know its random but this doesnt feel random or fair to be honest…

Welcome to the forum @FemkeGiraf

Gym creation is intended to be random and it’s not something that the wayfarer team typically has any control over. So no, you can’t appeal the placement. The only way you’d be able to do anything about it is if one of the gyms was an invalid wayspot that met the removal criteria. If all three of them are valid wayspots though, then that’s just how the gym layout is for that specific level 14 S2 cell.

This was never confirmed though, it’s only a speculation.

Staff most likely won’t confirm something like this as they don’t want it to get abused.

@FemkeGiraf Right now, we don’t know how gym creation fully works, other than the number of Wayspots needed in an L14 cell to get them. Even this staff hasn’t confirmed; the community figured it out.

It would be very difficult to abuse a confirmed intention to make random decisions.

Have to disagree with that. The possibility of abuse is always out there. We’ve seen gyms get removed maliciously for no reason other than one team doesn’t like that they can’t have control over it, so they want a different gym they can control, for example.

Besides, Wayfarer still have no control over stops/gyms, so not really a topic that should be discussed here.

So, for example, if a cell has 6 wayspots — 2 gyms and 4 others — and someone knows that gyms are promoted randomly, they’d have to remove and re-add wayspots several times to re-roll the gym until it lands in a better location. I’ve seen people try to do similar abuse, but they failed — it’s not easy to remove good wayspots to begin with. That’s what I meant by “very difficult” above.

I only pointed out that “it’s intended to be random“ was never confirmed..

The last time we discussed the topic of which pokestop gets promoted to a gym is linked here:From PokeStop to Gym?

Staff did not weigh in on that post. From the even older link I quoted there, I would have to agree with the assessment that Niantic “intends” the process to be random, even though it has been observed to be able to be influenced in the past. This may have happened in this case if those gyms are all older Wayspots.

Hello and welcome,

Gyms are determined based on how may L17 S2 cells are occupied in the larger L14 S2 cell. 1 Wayspot is allow per L17 S2 cell, and there are 36 of these size cells in a L14 S2 cell.

  • 2-5 Wayspots = 1 gym
  • 6-19 Wayspots = 2 gyms
  • 20+ Wayspots = 3 gyms

Gym creation isn’t random. If you don’t know how it is random. But whatever’s got the most photos and highest likes in the cell becomes a gym. My community has benefitted greatly cause of this. We have a raid hour spot that we can get 7-9 in 25mins all walking

I believe that was the previous method, my own recent (very small scale) tests have shown this not to be the case.

Find a L14 cell with just 1 occupied L17. Like current waypoint photos. Nominate another waypoint (which obviously wont have any votes) and I have seen occurrences of both the original and the new becoming the Gym.

Also checked Votes of a 5 occupied cell before nominating a new waypoint. It wasn’t the most votes that was converted (but this could possibly have been hidden “ingress” votes).
