I’m wondering how to address waypoint nominations that people number themselves. The numbering implies that it’s not distinct unless it’s something like a trail marker that is physically numbered. So like for example this nomination → if I was standing on the street corner they wouldn’t be distinct from each other, but what if they were far apart and I wouldn’t see multiple at once? Would that be treated like distinct? or would it be more like a golf holes situation where you nominate one?
Welcome to the forum!
This is one of those “use your best judgement” situations. I am not sure that we can agree on a single best answer for this.
I really dislike when people just assign numbers. I always recommend a different identifier, like “East” or “Main” or “X Street”. However, I do not believe that I would reject something because I did not like that they had assigned a number.
I don’t see their entire nomination, but did they convince you that this arch separately meets criteria? I personally don’t think I would have accepted the one that is in game in the first place, and this one seems to be just another overhang - not a great place for exercise, exploration, or being social.
I can’t give you a blanket statement on what to do every time. I do think that I would reject this as not being distinct. But not just because they numbered them. I am sure opinions will vary here.
@cyndiepooh thanks for the input. I do think your suggestion of putting a different identifier generally works better. I just saw a group of 4 baseball fields with the same field nominated at least three times - but one of those at least specified southwest even if it was placed between the southwest and northwest fields so it was more obvious
Hello @Benin
I agree that the numbering looks “ ugly” but not inaccurate. I too prefer using some other identifier but that I feel is a judgement choice.
I also agree that for this particular nomination my judgement is it doesn’t seem to merit it being acceptable - unless there was some sort of evidence in the supporting. They are in effect 3 entrances to Macy’s from what I can see at the South end of a shopping mall so they don’t seem distinct. And as the title and description focuses on it as an architectural feature to view and explore …..it doesn’t seem to be something I would take a friend to and say I want to show you this feature, and let’s go round the corner as there is another to look at and admire too.
I find the numbering is a warning sign when reviewing, since it shows the submitter might not think this is a distinct object, but I wouldn’t reject because of this - it would just make me look a little closer, especially if a borderline submission.
(I did once have to revert to numbering a set of submissions because I really couldn’t find any legitimate way to give them unique titles, when my titles were already a fairly long sentence.)
I have done it.. occasionally with trail markers if I can’t find any better reference. If possible I’d always use a place name or points of the compass.
But in the example submitted, “east” would be a better description.
