I would like to propose a change to the Wayfarer review UI: Make “Aerial Photograph” the default initial display for location checks instead of “Map View.”
-
Encouraging Location Manipulation:
Map View makes it impossible to verify if a pin is placed precisely on the object. This encourages applicants to offset pins to exploit inclusion rules, as these manipulations are likely to be approved without being noticed when only viewed on a map label. -
Increase in Inaccurate Approvals:
Many reviewers rely solely on the default Map View and do not switch to the aerial layer. This has led to an increase in approved POIs that are physically located on roads or private property, purely because they appeared “close enough” to a park or landmark on the map. -
Reviewer Fatigue:
Diligent reviewers who prioritize accuracy are forced to manually toggle to the aerial photograph for every single nomination, adding unnecessary friction and time to the review process.
Conclusion:
The core of Wayfarer is the accurate reflection of the real world. By defaulting to the Aerial Photograph, we can ensure that “Ground Truth” is the first thing every reviewer sees. This change will improve data quality and discourage bad actors from attempting to manipulate the system.
