I’ve just been presented with a wayspot submission of a public access defibrillator to review. I’m going to have to reject it as defibs don’t meet any of the criteria, as i understand them, but it feels like it would actually be a decent thing to be included. I couldn’t see that this had been previously discussed so thought I’d start a thread.
I guess a potential downfall of this as a category would be that if the public access defib was removed in the real world and not in game that would be a bad thing…?
I think I would lean towards the rejection criteria: “Obstructs Emergency Services” - do you want a bunch of people standing around doing a raid when someone needs to use this critical equipment?
besides as you say, it doesnt really fit any Eligibility criteria either
Just imagine 50 people taking down a Gigantamax Charizard and someone has a need for the defib because they had got a shundo! Ideal place!! (On a serious note, it needs to be rejected).
There’s a defib on an old phone box thats a waypoint in the next village over! Never sure how it was accepted but hey ho, it was
Also hi!
Hello and welcome,
I agree, a AED (automated electronic defib) is to be used in medical emergencies, and as someone that has gone through CPR/first aid training, I wouldn’t want these to be obstructed in any way. Time is of the essence when it comes to a cardiac emergency where an AED may be needed. If the nomination is for the AED and nothing else, I’d reject for obstructing emergency services.
Now, I have seen other eligible POIs that are near things that could be used in an emergency get nominated and approved. I recall someone getting a mosaic art piece at a supermarket rejected over and over because there was a fire extinguisher nearby and in both of the photos, and it took them awhile to get it approved. Most large buildings have more than 1 fire extinguisher, and may even have a fire suppression system, such as water sprinkles in the ceiling, so no one really saw the art piece fully obstructing emergency services.
And lastly, AEDs are becoming more and more common. It’s not unusual these days to see a couple in a large store, like a supermarket or Walmart, or even at malls, sports arenas/stadiums, even schools (yes, I know schools are ineligible locations, just giving an example). So, they are also getting generic and indistinct.
I also am first aid trained, and my viewpoint was a little different. Emergency services carry their own defibs so I dont think it would obstruct them per se. Some of my local community are definitely obstructive in some ways, but i dont think a single decent human would willingly obstruct access to an AED, and actually if you turned up to one to grab the AED and found a bunch of 40 people there, thats 40 more people who could help you in your first aid emergency, one of whom may even be an off-duty medical professional. Genuinely the only downside i can think of is to turn up to a location you believe there to be an AED only for it to not actually be there.
I have no doubt that they dont meet criteria but thanks for the discussion everyone.
Also hi @frealafgb hope youre well
I agree it’d be nice for the public to be aware of where defibrillators are, but that’s not Niantic’s job. They also don’t point out fire extinguishers, blood donation centers, or pet adoption places. None of these are a great place to explore, exercise, or socialize. Even if it’d be good for people to know where they are.
Not quite true with all of these. Some pet adoption centers offer dog parks, walking trails, and may even have publicly accessible artwork, like murals on the building.
The shelter I adopted my cat from has a dog park that’s open to the public. I know of another that has a dog park and gazebo/garden that’s also open to the public.
Cat cafes may have cats that are up for adoption, and can be adopted at the cafe, too.
But the pet adoption is not the focus of the POI in those cases, other things that coexist with the pet adoption place are. I agree with @MargariteDVille, pet adoption places themselves are not inherently a good POI, but may house or coexist with things that are, but that’s true of most places.
Yes, but it’s not clear in their post that other things at a pet adoption center may be eligible. Comparing them to fire extinguishers and blood donation centers isn’t very good; even blood donation centers could have eligible POIs, at least here in the US they could.
I didn’t say nothing AT a pet adoption or blood donation could ever ever be valid. I never said it’s zonal, like a school or private home.
Something exists “for the greater good” - isn’t an an acceptance criteria - doesn’t make it a great place to socialize, explore, or exercise - so is not the kind of database Niantic is trying to build.
If that place has something valid, nominate that. Maybe a meeting room is valid because it has public classes. But without the classes, that room isn’t valid just because you can do a transaction there. Even if the transaction is a noble one (adopt a pet, give blood, donate clothes, etc).
