Restore wayspot

When submitting a Wayspot Appeal, make sure to include as much of the following information as possible:

  • Wayspot Title: La virgen de Mármol
  • Location (lat/lon): (18.9581618, -99.2373123)
  • City: Cuernavaca
  • Country: Morelos
  • Screenshot of the Rejection Email (do not include your personal information): N/A
  • Additional Information (if any): respectfully request a review and potential restoration of the removed Wayspot “La Virgen de Mármol”, previously located on Avenida Domingo Diez, in a public plaza in Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico.

Context and Justification:
1. Legitimate and publicly accessible location:
The sculpture is located in a publicly accessible plaza, with pedestrian access and no restrictions. It stands on one of the city’s main avenues, making it a well-known and highly visible local landmark.
2. Artistic and cultural value:
The sculpture is a religious figure religious carved from cantera stone (a traditional Mexican quarried stone), approximately 2 meters tall, placed on a pedestal. As a permanent and meaningful artistic piece, it represents local cultural and spiritual identity.
3. Community relevance for players:
This Wayspot existed for several years as a gym, serving as a key gathering and strategy location for the local player community. Its recent removal disrupted gameplay and deleted previously established routes created by players.
4. Evidence of its previous existence:
While no photos were saved at the time of removal, I possess the gym badge as proof of prior interaction. I am willing to revisit the site and take new photos to confirm the sculpture’s continued presence and exact location.
5. Compliance with Niantic criteria:
• It is a permanent, physically unique, and culturally significant object.
• It is located in a safe, pedestrian-accessible area.
• It holds cultural, social, and symbolic value for the community.

I kindly request a reconsideration for this Wayspot’s removal and ask that it be restored. Alternatively, I request permission to resubmit the Wayspot with updated documentation.

Thank you for your time and for supporting efforts to map meaningful community locations.

Welcome to the forum!

I have no say in this appeal, but I try to help folks make the best case possible. When I check this location on Maps, I just see a liquor store and no statue. The team will need evidence that the statue currently exists if they are going to even consider whether this location is acceptable.

If this is the Wayspot in question, it was last visible on Street View in 2018 when the building was a bistro, with construction going on in a street view from 2019.

I check the street view but cant find it. You may need to provide proof that the object still exist.

Just to add to what the others have said, if you are able to provide evidence that this still exists (geotagged photos would be useful), and it does get restored, it might not come back as a gym if another gym was created when it was removed.

Hi everyone,

I recently took new photos to confirm that the location still exists and remains publicly accessible, as previously described.

I used an app called Exif Viewer to review the image metadata. While I wasn’t able to share the photos directly with embedded EXIF data from the app, the geolocation metadata is available, and I can provide it if anyone would like to verify it.

The photos clearly show the religious figure carved from cantera stone, although I should mention that due to the rainy season in my region, vegetation—particularly a nearby tree—has grown, which may slightly obstruct the view in some shots. Nevertheless, the sculpture remains in place, within a public plaza, and continues to serve as a local landmark.

I’m willing to take additional photos if needed, or share the EXIF data more directly if someone can guide me on how to do that properly. I truly appreciate the community’s guidance and support in helping preserve this meaningful cultural and gameplay location.

Best regards,

Based on your photo, it should be here, but i still cant find it. And the object look different from 2018 one

Hi, thank you for checking and for your observations.

You’re correct that the object isn’t clearly visible in Street View — after the area was remodeled, an electric bollard was installed, which unfortunately blocks the direct view of the statue from the street. However, the religious figure is still there, standing on the same base, just partially obstructed by a tree, especially during the rainy season when foliage is dense.

In the recent photos I shared, you can clearly see:

  • The stone base, which has not changed.
  • The red flowers placed by local visitors as offerings, a tradition that remains ongoing.
  • The same surrounding layout, confirming the location.

Although it may look different from the 2018 version due to changes in angle, lighting, or vegetation, the statue has not been removed — it’s just harder to spot from maps imagery. I can provide a wider view or return for additional photos if needed.

It seems I’ll need to wait until after the rainy season, when the tree can be properly trimmed, to take a new set of clearer photos.

Hi again, and thank you for following up.

I recorded a video on-site to show the current state and surroundings of the statue. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to upload the video here, but I’ve included screenshots from the video that clearly show:

The statue in its actual location.

The same stone base as before.

The tree and electric bollard that currently block the view from the street, which explains why it’s not visible on Google Street View.

These images help demonstrate that the object still exists, is in good condition, and remains publicly accessible. The limited visibility is mainly due to the angle and seasonal tree growth.

I hope these screenshots help clarify the situation. Let me know if additional evidence is needed — I’m happy to revisit the site again.

Thanks again for your time and support!

Hi @absolutvictor
What is the building your POI is attachted to?

Hi, thank you for your question.

To clarify, the statue is located in front of a commercial establishment known for offering gourmet products and select international imports. The location is part of a well-known and accessible shopping area, frequented by many people in the community, and situated along a major avenue in Cuernavaca.

However, I want to emphasize that the focus of this Wayspot proposal is not the business itself, but rather the religious statue carved in cantera stone, which has stood for many years in a public-facing area. It is part of the cultural and visual landscape of the community and remains accessible to pedestrians at all times.

This statue is independent of any commercial signage or branding, and its presence contributes to the character and identity of the space in a way that aligns with Niantic’s criteria for exploration and community value.

I hope this clears up any confusion. I’m happy to provide more details if needed!

Ah thank you. I couldn’t understand it correct from streetview and wanted to check out if this could probablly be on SFPRP (single family private residential property).
So let’s see how Niantic/Scopely will decide.
Good luck :four_leaf_clover:
