I have seen a few Wayspot nominations for newer Starbucks locations. Many Starbucks cafes are sponsored Wayspots, but that doesn’t mean they otherwise meet the Wayfarer criteria. From my perspective, Starbucks is a generic business unless there is something special about a particular Starbucks, or unless the submitter explains how that specific one is significant to the community. Is this a reasonable interpretation?
I would agree, though if it’s artwork that just happens to be at a Starbucks, rather than being nominated AS Starbucks, that I would likely accept.
Your interpretation is accurate. The onus is always on the submitter to support why a nomination fits criteria, and it is rare that a Starbucks will be eligible on its own merit.
Art/community noticeboards/etc. inside a Starbucks is usually much more likely that the business itself to pass review.
Yeah, I agree – unless the artwork wouldn’t otherwise qualify (e.g. if it’s a generic decoration).
That’s how I’ve been reviewing, so I’m glad my interpretation is reasonable. Most Starbucks submissions that I see have justifications like “All Starbucks are important”, so I reject them.
Well yes… some businesses will decorate with the equivalent of stock photos. I haven’t been in enough Starbucks to know. I meant unique artwork (custom for that location).
As a comparison, in my area we have a small local chain of Mexican quick service places. I think their location count is somewhere in the high teens. They have different custom murals - in some cases more than one - at each location. At least four of them are wayspots (two of which I submitted).
You get the same with places like Raising Cane’s (which has an official corporate portrait artist, Steve Ko) and Firehouse Subs and Texas Roadhouse, custom art at each location that is absolutely eligible.
But some Starbuckses (Starbuces like inidices???) totally do have custom art. I know there’s a neat painting in the Starbucks inside the Hilton hotel in the heart of Milwaukee (which I only didn’t nominate because the Starbucks was sponsored and it wouldn’t have done anyone any good).
I would anyway - it would take over if Starbucks ever drops the sponsorship like McDonalds did a few months ago.
