Should I risk it? Cattle Drinking Trough

So I found out about a Peregine nest at a local hospital and was trying to work out roughly where the best viewing point was….. Whilst I was Google Mapping, I found this on the central reservation….

Google Maps

Now can I get to it by foot safely? In my opinion I can, via the Pedestrian Crossing a little further down. However, I recognise the fact that not everyone will see it the same way. So am asking the community in the style of “Who wants to be a Millionaire”…. with the use of 50/50 and ask the audience…. It’s not a big deal if I don’t submit it, but just looking at the eligibility of this before I submit considering where the Horse Drinking Fountain is located. Not currently worried about how to write this up, will work that bit out later.

I wouldn’t try and describe it as a horse drinking fountain, but as a planter. I think it’s a hard sell.

It’s a historic Cattle Drinking Trough now converted into a Flower display. The Fountain is the subject, and is of historic significance.

My take is that it fails in that regard because it was never used as a horse drinking fountain in that location, but is an old stone trough that has been placed there specifically as a planter.

Don’t want to argue the point, but this will help.

I will correct my original post in that this is a Cattle Trough and not a Horse Trough.

That changes things!

With a picture from that angle, I would be accepting this wayspot. The engraving helps a lot. As for pedestrian accessibility, as long as you can walk to it from the crossing (no railings in the way), you should be fine.

I was looking at th first picture thinking what fountain? And this looks ordinary….
But that inscription in the picture puts a New light on it.
Try to get a day hen the inscriptions shows up well.
The article gives plenty of info for the description.

However I do think safe pedestrian access is not there.
There is a pedestrian crossing point further up, but there is a car section between.
The crossing point is clearly fenced to stop people wandering off of that area.

So the grass area is not meant to be a place to walk.
Nice though it is I don’t think it’s in a suitable location

We have something similar in Reading that was successfully added as a PoI (not by me, but I would have!).

That is my line of thinking that it isn’t safe enough. But I do know people have used the central reservations in the area to cross the road. I will probably pass on this one….

I think the object is of interest and is eligible.. but the location doesn’t look that pedestrian-friendly alas. Tricky.

On the surface I would agree it doesn’t look pedestrian friendly. But I hate to see a good nomination not being eligible. I’ll go and cry in the corner…. I know there’s a couple of parks in the area which has some stuff that are missing from the game, so may try and sub those.

All we need to do is appeal to the council to shift it so that members of the public can appreciate it.
And not be tempted to go there
(As a habitual self confessed breaker of being herded to cross at specific points :joy: - I tell myself off repeatedly )

I can show you a few in other places. I love this. @P1dg3ySlayer I hazard. in the 19thC/early 20thC, people raised money to provide drinking troughs for "“the local animals” from the farm to house animals to horse an cart … . There was one couple in Australia who paid for hundreds if not thousands across australia and other countries including the UK.

I agree not safe to access - but maybe if the council rates are put up high enough – 'cause they cannot even afford fixing pot holes or other facilities that benefit the majority - then good luck moving it for PGO  ma ha ha ha

Now as for it being moved there as a planter. Maybe not. We have no history of the roads - well general infrastructure for the area. How it changed since say prior to 1930’s . Back in the day maybe that central reservation was part of more land.

From a historical point of view this is amazing as it asks so many questions from on basic humanity (was it a charitable build) to how urban environments change  thanks for sharing !!!
