Should this nomination be eligible (modern architecture)?

Hello, I am here with another architectural conundrum. I have submitted the nomination below, but it was rejected by ML. I am now wondering if it’s worth appealing.

It is the second time I submit this, the first time it went to ML as well, got rejected, and the appeal got rejected by Niantic for the nomination not having ‘uniqueness, historical or cultural value’, which is where I disagree. So I hoped the new nomination with added links & a different picture justifying the submission would make it through voting. But alas, ML rejected it.

Here’s why I think the submission is good: this specific cluster of floating houses was the first neighbourhood featuring modern floating houses (not boats, and with the new engineering technology) in the Netherlands/Europe. It was a tipping point in modern architecture history of floating dwellings. It may look not unique on the surface as floating houses are in more places now, but this is where they pretty much started over a decade ago. It is kind of niche knowledge, I know, which is exactly why I think it’s interesting to learn and meets exploration criteria.

Here is the description I added:

De grootste drijvende woonwijk van Europa bevindt zich in IJburg, met steegjes, bruggetjes en een keur aan woningtypes met elk een eigen aanmeerplek voor bootjes. Het was de eerste wijk in Nederland die bestond uit drijvende woningen. Ingenieuze engineering van flexibele kabels en leidingen, stabilisering, constructie op een werf en transport over het IJsselmeer! Ontworpen door Marlies Rohmer Architecture & Urbanism.

Here are the links I included as extra information.

What do you think? Is this eligible? If yes, is there anything I should improve about the nomination? Or should I just go ahead and appeal it?

“Modern Architecture” is not something that I have nominated so hopefully someone else can give more advice.

The only reason I see for the AI Reject is that the main photo seems to show more of the water than the building.

The AI could have seen this as…

  • Open Water.
  • A “standard” building.
    Neither it sees as eligible.

If you are local I would suggest taken an image closer showing less water.

Good Luck.

Oh I have seen programmes featuring floating houses.
Are these single family private residential property because that would exclude them?
Have they won any awards?
It’s also better not to tell reviewers to go google - provide the links

I think some of them are single family properties, but I am not sure if all of them are (particularly the very tall ones). I’m submitting them as a group of buildings & area rather than an individual house or an element on an individual house (you can walk on the jetties between, they’re publicly accessible and act as a ‘street’). I am also not placing the wayspot on any individual house, but rather at the entrance to the area. So my thinking was this would be fine.

Regarding awards: yes, I have a link to one in my post.

Apologies :joy: I blame the heat my brain stops working.

The pin placement will be tricky is there a an obvious entrance point….can you share your idea of where to place.
It’s not an easy one this but I find it interesting

No worries.

So, there are 4 entrances through the big building on the side, these are the main places to enter. I was thinking to just use the middle ‘steiger’, it is on an apartment building and not single family property. The apartment building is technically and aesthetically part of the ‘ensemble’, but it is not the interesting thing here. So I thought that could be a fair placement.

There’s another entrance via neighbouring street, but that side could potentially be by some single family properties, so I don’t think that is the best.

I am attaching some street view screenshots, so you could see what I’m talking about.

Mildly interesting architecture doesn’t end up winning architecture awards or with Discovery engineering segments (both of which I linked), or pioneer how certain type of building is approached in the future (floating houses). I think these things are what make this particular set of buildings extra special.

You can try. You can consider people’s comment here as input on how to improve your nomination. If it still fail, maybe general reviewer are still not convinced about your nomination.

In my opinion your foto need to be better. Things like this need good presentation. People are expecting award winning building to be something that looks special. If it doesnt looks distinct enough, you already fail in reviewer’s eyes

I will try again. And if it doesn’t work out I shall accept my fate.

Good luck
And that entrance point seems fair.
