There is a problem with this system

Hi, I’ve not been around for super long, but I’m a champion rank, with over 60% agreements and made plenty of submissions. I say this to explain that I have seen and experienced enough of the process and system to say that it’s not great right now, and I think it creates a feedback loop that will continue to make it worse.

Currently about 60%, maybe even 70% of reviews I get are copies of the same trail markers. I live in the Netherlands and there’s probably more trail markers (bike, hike, mountain bike, horse, etc) then there are people. And they, together with a couple of other categories are held at a completely different standard as everything else.

I’ve recently uploaded a newly opened shopping plaza, the welcome sign of an older shopping plaza, an official community center, a unique bench, a carved wall stone with the build year of a building, some (not the greatest but still decent) artworks, a park, bike tunnel with mosaic tiled walls, and a plant cutting trade box.
All of them got rejected, and most for lacking uniqueness or historical or cultural value.
But when I upload 4 “go straight ahead” arrows trail markers in the same street it’s “Ah yes, thank you, this is the uniqueness I crave”. The same goes for dog park signs and utility boxes with anything on them.
And a park without a “dogs can run free” sign as it’s image only rarely passes by the ML, let alone the voting. With the sign you need the simplest description and title and can ignore the additional info no matter how big or small, but without one you need to proof it’s unique to a level that does not even remotely exist in the same plane of uniqueness of having a simple dog park sign.

And thus when I have to choose between something that looks aesthetically pleasing, is a social hub, looks unique and different.. or upload another arrow, little free library, utility box or dog park.. I’ll take the arrow, because I know it’ll pass without any issues or need for appeals with the most basic effort description.
For example the tunnel with mosaic tiles walls I mentioned earlier has a hiking trail run trough it. I mentioned it, even uploaded the stickers to add exercise to the location. But after it got rejected I uploaded just the hiking trail sticker which passed without issue. Now the stop will have another arrow sticker as the photo instead of a nicer unique looking mosaic tiled wall.

So whenever I find an area that doesn’t have many stops yet for people that live there, my first step is to check the hiking and biking trail map of my country to see if any run through that area.
And I think many people do the same thing.
Looking for anything else is held to such a high standard it feels punishing and a huge uphill battle for very little returns. And I am sick of reviewing those stupid trail stickers. But I don’t blame those who upload them, I do too. Because I get it. The ML doesn’t like anything unique, and if something is unique, it’s such an enormously high bar to be unique enough.

And that’s what I think the problem is right now. The system punishes trying to make fun or “good” waystops, while it reinforced and rewards lazy duplicate looking ones. Which means more people will choose it over the others, only training the ML to further prefer them making it harder and harder to get anything else through.

I don’t know if people that have been here longer than me have noticed the same, or see things different. I don’t know how things have changed over the last 10 years. But I do know that right now, it’s not good.

I am sorry to hear this. First of all , noone is under obligation to review anything. You are free to take a break if you arent feeling good.

  1. Trail marker are one of candidate that might be eligible. There is nothing wrong with nominating them as long its legitimate and not fake nomination.
  2. If you strongly believe that any of your nomination got incorrectly rejected, you are free to appeal or resubmit. Some of what you mention below seems eligible, so i am interested to see full detail on your nomination (title, description, foto, information, location, etc)

I’m sorry, I think using my own submissions as examples probably got my point confused. The problem I’m talking about isn’t my personal stuff, but the system as a whole. I’m not trying to dispute that according to the official criteria that many of my rejections are probably correct. Nor did I try to say that any of the trail markers that are submitted are ineligible according to the official criteria. I like to think that I understand the official criteria well enough.

To put it in hopefully better wording;
I think there is a problem with the imbalance for the requirements in the official criteria in different categories. This has been leading to entire areas filling up with the same looking images legitimately because the criteria allows it without effort. Which leads to people realizing those are the best way to get a waystop, thus submitting more of them while everything else that would make an area diverse or actually show places unique to that area take time, effort and often appeals. And the markers are so abundant here it’s rare to be able to walk 500m in any point in the country without encountering one.

The problem I see isn’t that I am able to take the effort to argue the system that my nomination got correctly or incorrectly rejected using an appeal. The problem is that I’ll just leave it and upload the arrow marker instead of adding another thing on the queue of things to appeal one day. And that I know the same mentality is being enforced more and more throughout my country, and probably others too.

I want more uniquely looking stops around me, ones that are appealing, fun to send and share. Places I visit or I would visit. Things I recognize from having walked past unique to the area. These were the stops I mostly created. But they constantly get rejected. I am aware most probably correctly according to the criteria and system as it is now, but I used to try anyway because they would make for great waystops in my oppinion. But people like having stops around them. So in the same location as those stops that get rejected, someone will upload an arrow marker, and does get through without question.

60 to 70% of all new stops I see when I review are the same looking arrow signs and stickers. They’re all legitimate stops. When I say this it’s not to complain about reviewing. It’s to indicate that the 60-70% that are trail markers almost all get to go through, while the other 30-40% a large part don’t. Meaning there are sooooo many more markers added for everything else. And I can see it happen that in a year half of all waystops in any area in my country will be trail markers.

And I think that is a problem.

Please understand that wayfarer simply provide wayspot for multiple games. Each candidate (trail marker or non trail marker) will be treated with its own merit and wayfarer only responsible for reviewing them. Each game will then have its own inclusion rule on how to use those wayspot. Imho wayfarer cant help you on this matter, you need to bring this suggestion to pokemon go

Personally i dont have issue with trail marker pokestop but maybe its just me. I submit anything submitable in my area, if you think you got incorrectly rejected, you are free to resubmit or appeal.

I was already completely aware of this yes. Maybe me using the phrase “stop” and “waystop” instead of “wayspot” by misremembering the correct phrase made it confusing, but I think this is irrelevant to what I’ve been saying.

After seeing your last edit I’m starting to suspect you didn’t even read through my post.

Personally i have no issue with reviewing trail marker and surrounded by it as long they are eligible. Wayfarer are free to choose what they want to submit. You are also free to choose whether you want to review or not.

I’ve had exactly the same experience sadly :frowning:

Part of the issue is you might be confusing the underlying goal of the wayfarer map. Its not really to create interesting things even though it does actively encourage this. The goal is to get safe things on the map that encourage people to exercise (walk), socialize, and explore thier culture/art/mind/environment. “Unique” has long been a confusing use of the term when what was originally meant was “if I’m standing at the location then can I actually find the object”. A tree in a forest is not unique but the plaque talking about the history of the tree is. Even if each tree nearby has a different plaque.

To answer what I think the OP is trying to say I will say that I agree. I also would prefer a diverse set of wayspots. It would be great if I could say to someone "I will meet you at the “abc” pokestop without the answer “which one?”.

You have identified a problem but what is the solution?

Some areas only have “Trail Markers” because they are the only eligible locations in the area. Should they not be nominated in this case?

I always thought that I would never nominate a Trail Marker as my thoughts on them have been mentioned several times on the forums, the main 1 is the difficulty in confirming the trail marker is at that location. Evidence can be found that they is a trail there but we have all seen the trails where the trails are perfectly located to fit in every possible cell. This is why I Skip a lot of them.
I have recently nominated 2 trail markers in the same area as it’s a popular walking area with no wayspots and nothing else eligible. There is more but I hope others will see mine and they can nominate them.

So I think Problem is probably to strong a word “personal annoyance” maybe…

I’ve tended to look at Wayspot submissions a bit like fashion trends: sometimes a particular type of submission becomes popular for a time, then fades when replaced by another newer trend. For a long while, definitely too long in my opinion, Trail Markers were unfashionable and frequently rejected, while other types of submissions were more easily accepted. It can be frustrating seeing a lack of diversity, I know! All I can recommend is to keep submitting those other Wayspots, using the supporting information to explain how they meet one or more of the core criteria, and using appeals to correct any rejections you feel are invalid. Once a few of those other Wayspots go on the map, more people will see them and trends may slowly change. I hope you remain both patient and persistent, and wish you success with future nominations!

Agreed. The point of Pokemon Go is exploring and moving. I don’t think there are many POI that fits this more than trail markers. As long as they’re unique (different signage, numbers, etc.) then I’m all for them. They might not be a popular with the auto-catching, driving instead of walking from place to place crowd, but the more spots that encourage movement and exercise, the better.

To give some extra context; these are the markers commonly used;

and this is the density of the routes. each orange line is about 10-15 of these.

they’re all official. then there’s also the biking routes, and all the other local routes. I have a spot near me where there’s 8 distinct and different way markers of different types of routes in a 10 meter area. All official, but from different official programs. And all there is there is asphalt.
