Hi community and Team Niantic,
I came across an unusual map layout in my local area and wanted to see if anyone could explain how this happened.
There are currently two fully active Gyms located within the exact same S2 Level 17 cell.
My understanding of the inclusion rules is that only one object (PokéStop or Gym) can occupy an L17 cell at any given time. Both real-world locations are distinct, accurate, and completely valid, but they are clearly sharing a single cell right now in Pokémon GO.
Could a Niantic Admin or experienced Wayfinder look into this? Is this cell simply stuck in a glitched state, and will a manual database sync eventually correct it to match modern cell rules?
Location Info:
- Gym 1 Name: 春江园靈法堂
- Gym 2 Name: Taman Seri Kijang Dato Gong Shrine
- Coordinates : (5.318256,100.475322)
Thank you!
Looks like these were both made 5 years ago. That would line up with when there was a bug in the system. There was a time when if a pokestop or gym was created elsewhere then moved though a location edit that the area would not recalibrate and both could exist in the same cell. This was massively abused and many areas have since been cleaned up but a few remain. This is also why local location edits are limited to 10 meters and for larger edits you need to ask an employee for help.
Does that mean this gym has been moved before but manage to stay in the same cell?
Usually the way it worked was someone would abusivly create it in a cell far away then move it to its real position in an already filled cell. There were also cases where someone would steal a pokestop or gym from its real location and stack them all in one cell. I once saw in review that someone was trying to move a waypoint from USA to somewhere in Europe.
I think it’s also possible to achieve similar effects with sponsored gyms, no?
That’s the most likely reason, yes.
There used to be a huge bug in the system which let POis stay in game if they got moved into an occupied cell. That is fixed since the end of 2020, I believe.
