Title: Pallas-laivan muistomerkki

Description: Yksi seitsemästä muistomerkistä laivoille, jotka C. G. Wolff valmisti 1834-1868 välisinä vuosina Palosaaren telakalla. Pallas rakennutettiin vuonna 1848 ja oli kooltaan 220 lästiä.

Supporting info: One of seven memorial signs in Vaasa for ships built by C. G. Wolff. The street is also named after the ship.

My question here is what counts as pedestrian access. I suspect that this nomination was rejected because there is no sidewalk here. I don’t have concrete numbers but, I could estimate that under 5% of Finnish road network has sidewalks (I think I’m being generous with the number). So should it be a reason for rejection. Or am I missing something here.

Also as a rant, how can a memorial sign (something that sells nothing) be a “Generic business”, I’ve had two of these seven memorial signs now rejected (three accepted, and one trough appeal), and both of them have Generic Business as a rejection reason after appeal.

So, one countries safe road access is another countries nightmare. I would struggle with nominations which do not have a pavement where someone can walk on in order to get to a location.

Yeah I just wonder how it could be fixed. For example the nearest sidewalk / bikepath (I could figure out how to get bike paths not sidewalks on maps, but here basicly same thing) is 500m away., But people live here and there are multiple parks next to the location.

(Image shows sidewalks in a black/green line)

Unfortunately, I can’t answer the question. I understand that not all areas will have pavements / side walks, but I’m not sure how to fix the issue you are facing with this nomination. Whilst I am sure it looks safe, for some of us who may review this type of nomination, it’s hard to tell how safe the area on face value.

So, as to the generic business rejection, some reviewers find this to be the best option to reject a nomination, since Niantic has said to reject on 1 of the first 4 questions to make sure you reject a nomination. Others rejected this for being unsafe, so a downvote on Safe, which triggered the pedestrian access rejection reason. That makes more sense than generic business, but I think some reviewers see generic business as also meaning something generic, but I myself downvote on Permanent/Distinct, as something that’s indistinct can be generic, but not a generic business.

Yes, not all places in our world have sidewalks, and in some places, roads and streets are shared by vehicles and pedestrians. Many rural areas in the US don’t have sidewalks, and yet there are historical signs on the side of the roads that pedestrians can access safely in the grass next to the road.

The supporting photo you shared doesn’t show the sign in the area, which would make me wonder if it’s even there, as well as how safe the area is to pedestrians. I think that may have hurt you here, as the supporting photo should show the nomination within the surrounding area, not just the surrounding area. You also don’t say anything about pedestrian access in the supporting info, just that the street is named for the ship builder, so that could have also been seen as unsafe by some.

Here’s an example from a softball field I recently submitted; it was accepted by ML, just to note. The main photo is of the backstop. The church in this area already has a Wayspot, and the field is southeast of it, so I took a photo with the backstop in it that also shows the church in the background. I also made sure to note the direction from the church in my supporting info, as well as there being areas for pedestrians around the field.

“which triggered the pedestrian access rejection reason.”

I understand this, but this was only added after the apeal.

The supporting photo you shared doesn’t show the sign in the area, which would make me wonder if it’s even there

I’m sorry for the bad supporting photo, this nomination is quite old and I was probably too lazy to take a good photo.

But this is what it looks like on streetview, the memorial is on the street sign (have gotten mixed opinions about it, but as these are special memorial street signs (about a dozen in the city and havent seen in other cities) I’ve decided to make waypoints of them)

“You also don’t say anything about pedestrian access in the supporting info”

I don’t know why I should include that in the supporting info, I myself use it for putting a translation of the description, since the area I live in has a major minority of Swedes. The official guide is to write “why you believe your nomination is important”. I don’t think an area is important, just because it has a sidewalk

“Here’s an example from a softball field I recently submitted”

Thanks for the example, I’ll try to be less lazy with these. Do you have any advise on going forward? Should I just resubmit these with better supporting info or?

The supporting info is to explain why the nomination meets criteria, including why it’s safe to be visited by pedestrians. Being safe to be visited by pedestrians is one of the key aspects for Wayfarer, as they don’t want Wayspots approved in places that people on foot or bike can get to, or if there are other safety issues.

I always include information on accessability for pedestrians in my supporting info, even if it’s something like a park playground off of a park trail only for pedestrians. It’s just a good thing to include, and to remember for future nominations.
