Why are Government Facilities OK?

I work in a facility operated by the U.S. Department of Energy. There are signs all over the perimeter that state “No Trespassing” and mention all of the penalties that can be levied if one does. There are also certain buildings that no one can go near unless they have a dosimeter because of the radiation. There is one PokeStop that is close enough to read one of those radiation warning signs. Why then, are there PokeStops and gyms inside the facility?

Welcome to the forum @rci3044

Wayspots are allowed in locations with limited access, so long as those with access to the area can do so safely. People who don’t have access to these areas are expected to follow real world rules and not trespass. The game even tells you not to trespass when you load it.

If the Pokéstop in question is not within the boundary of the zone where you’re required to have a dosimeter, and you would be able to stand there safely, then it’s probably alright for it to exist. Obviously if it’s in the area where there’s a higher potential for exposure to radiation, that wouldn’t be great and I would say it would definitely warrant removal on safety grounds.

If it is in a safe area, but you still feel uncomfortable with it existing, you could always talk to someone in a position of authority at the facility, and if they agree with you that it shouldn’t exist, they are welcome to contact Niantic using the relevant form and request removal of the wayspot. The form can be found here:

Players are allowed to have PokéStops in closed areas, as long as it’s safe to be there and it’s not an industrial area.

If a PokéStop is in an unsafe area due to radiation, it can be reported and removed for safety reasons.

If a PokéStop is in an industrial area, it falls under “obstructs …” rejection criteria and can be reported as well.

Location obstructs the driveways of emergency services or may interfere with the operations of fire stations, police stations, hospitals, military bases, industrial sites, power plants, or air traffic control towers
