Why would my submission of a public care facility not be good enough?

Pathways Intermediate Care Facility, in Corning, NY is a facility that provides clinical heath care for residents with disabilities. They are both young and old. They have a bus that brings residents in and out of the facility daily. These visitors and residents of the facility would greatly benefit from the entertainment that this spot would provide. Some have mental disabilities. if there a specific concern with this submission that I might be able to mitigate?

Welcome to the forum @xerabz

Wayfarer nominations need to be a great place to socialise, a great place to exercise, and/or a great place to explore. A care facility by itself doesn’t really fall into any of those three eligibility criteria, and so the rejection was likely correct.

That being said, there could be something at or nearby to the care facility that might fall into one of those categories?

As far as excercise goes, many of the residents of the facility goes on daily walks and outtings. It’s on a hill which is used by locals for walking, biking, and running. Being just outside of the town, many like to travel up the road and area for it’s views and for hiking.

Good day and welcome to the forum!

While the residents can be invested in exercise/socialization/exploration, you’ll need to tie the eligibility criteria to the POI itself (the healthcare facility in this case). I assume that residents and visitors primarily go there to seek medical help, less so for recreational purposes.

IMO these reasons take away the interest from the point of interest as it talks about places near the facility rather than itself. I can see that they host fundraisers albeit at a different address, I’d lean towards the event venue resonating more towards the eligibility criteria rather than this facility itself.

So, as I said, the residents of the facility go for outtings daily. Many will walk up and down the road, travel by bus, etc… It’s a large regional organization that provides services to support the community and as such has a large regional footprint including all sorts of fundraisers. Heres one example:

Again, I reiterate. Exploration, exercise, and socialization may happen here but the facility is not intended for recreational purposes.

These can apply anywhere and the statement focuses on the residents’ activity, not what the facility itself brings.

I brought up the fundraiser because it seems to be held at a different venue. This venue may relate towards the eligibility more than this care facility itself.

The community significance is definitely there. However, the eligibility criteria asks for significance in relation to being a great place for exercise, socialization, and exploration in the sense that the submitted place is intended for recreational use.

The hill and area is used for excercise as I said. The facility has both residents and visitors which makes it a place for socialization. And, the hill is often used for exploration due to it’s views.

There is a difference between exercise coincidentally occurring at or near the location, and people actively going to the location for the express purpose of exercising.

For example, a gym is a great place to exercise because that’s literally what it’s built for. Likewise for a swimming pool, or a football field, or a tennis court, and so on. You might also get exercise by walking to those locations, but that’s more coincidental, which is why random sidewalks are not considered to be great places to exercise (though walking trails are).

Understood. It’s a hill. Locals go to this area for excercise.

If you haven’t already, you can see your nominations from Niantic Wayfarer

It may better help us see the context if the full nomination is also posted here.

Wayspot Submission for Pathways Intermediate Care Facility

Corning NY

Appeal Pending

2025-03-04

Appeal Notes

I’m at a loss as to why a facility that has dozens of disabled and undisabled people who reside and visit this location, often by bus, is not worthy of a stop. The people who visit and reside there go on daily walks and outtings. They are young and old. Pathways is a non-for-profit organization serving over 2000 residents in the Finger Lakes region. https://www.pathwaysforyou.org/. This is a community based facility, it’s next to a public road that many walk or run on, it is a gathering place, and this stop would provide entertainment and enjoyment for the facilities visitors, residents, and local visitors and residents.

Description

This facility cares for people with intellectual disabilities and other related conditions.

Location

2753 Davis Rd, Corning, NY 14830, USA

Supplemental Information

This care facility provides care for disabled people from the surrounding communities. This pokestop would provide entertainment and joy to the children and adults who reside there.

The points to address are the same IMO. You are not submitting the hill, a recreational facility on the hill, or using the care facility as a visual placemarker for the hill. You submitted the care facility itself.

Additionally, it may help to focus on the merits of the place irl rather than its utility in game or Niantic product. It may also be valuable to check the criteria & help pages, and Criteria Clarification Collection

Since the appeal is pending, do keep us updated about the decision.

Welcome.

That this is a residential facility (am I reading that correctly?) for people with disabilities, I’d hesitate to approve this one, considering it a “sensitive location”. I’m not sure if others would think the same way on this.

We have discussed care facilities before on the forum, and it’s always a bit enlightening and frustrating how they are seen.

My view is that being a care facility, medical centre etc isnt eligible because it isnt a great place to be social, exercise, or explore. However, these places may contain spaces within their grounds which do meet those criteria

For example, there may be a pool, gym, or other exercise space. That could be nominated as a good place for exercise

There may be a common room, patio/pergola area, or cafe, and those could be good places to socialise. Especially if its a place where friends and family can come to visit residents

There may be artwork, sculptures, or ornamental displays that could be good places to explore.

So I would focus not on the facility itself but on the places it offers that could meet criteria on their own

It is not a sensitive location just because adults with a disability could live there or visit. There isnt any reason to disqualify the entire site, and there could be eligible places within it. People with disabilities and medical conditions dont need protecting from mobile games and in fact may be gamers themselves.

Hopefully that makes sense?

100% agree with this. I really dislike the sentiment that persons with disabilities are fragile and should be tiptoed around or even forgotten in their tucked away little corner of the world.

I do agree that the facility itself does not met criteria any more than a hospital would. And, yes, there may be things or places inside or around the facility that do meet criteria.

I repeat my plea for all you to not take away my wayspots when I am old and living in a care home. I was born into the Atari age and I will be playing games until there is no more breath in my body.

Ooh!!! Think how many eggs/seedlings I’ll hatch while sitting in my rocking chair!

I think it could fall under sensitive in regards to the people giving the care and that their work should be respected and not interfered with. I have submitted or helped with the nominations on several points of interest geared for the disabled community. And many at the local 50+ and retirement communities. But not in the Alzheimer’s and dementia units where constant care and oversight is required.

In my opinion, it will be easier to nominate other thing inside that care facility as some people is not comfortable with its similarity to hospital. Its similar logic with restaurant. There are a lot restaurant around us, but we cant submit all of them as many fall will fall under generic business category. But we can submit mural, playground, art, fountain, etc inside it.
