I got banned on my account just for trying to update an image of a Point of Interest that was outdated

I do like to give people the benefit of doubt but as shown in my comments something didn’t quite sit right which is why I asked “Are you sure the ban could not have been due to something else and this was just a co-incidence.”

When I started to read the later replies and saw the “10 year ban” I was confident this was not down to “a simple mis-understanding” then came Aaron’s confirmation.

Problem is that most of us replying to post here are trying to help, some of the rules can be confusing but cases like this make you start to wonder should you bother.

You have to not let these “not telling the whole truth” along with the “No, you are all wrong, staff are wrong and only I am right” get to you.

You have to think of the ones you have helped. My favourites are those that come in quite strong, get several people advising and go away knowing more, understanding more and with several suggestions of better nominations.

It is nice when that happens. Sometimes you can tell it will never happen, sometimes the op is angry/confused and then calms down and finds the advice is helping, sometimes an op takes the advice on board from the beginning.

TBH, when it’s a ban, I usually wait for Aaron to weigh in. Too often, the ban has nothing to do with whatever the person is talking about.

Well the issue is quite sensitive so not all people will be willing to share the warning/suspension email.

Anyway if anyone need to use my warning/suspension screenshot, feel free to do so.

I am trying to get better at just leaving it for staff. But in this case I thought I could help by explaining repurposing. I also think that explanation will help anyone who randomly comes across this post, even though that does not appear to have had anything to do with the op’s situation.

It’s always hard when someone comes in with a misconception or their own narrative. I want to help them if it is truly a mistake. But I also want to be clear about what/why something happened for folks that may be reading along.

Not responding to anyone in particular….
I always think this community is very good at being welcoming even when it is a topic that elsewhere will get “jumped on”. We are good at seeing the human.
I like to take things as they are, and explore. The tell us more approach often starts to unravel either a very different story or important details. Sometimes the chance to talk about it and have points explained can help someone reach a good conclusion.
We know that Aaron will appear and clarify, but the timing is such that it could be a long wait.
Take part if you feel comfortable, some have really appreciated it.

i do have to go with what I find…

If I and others have given what I believe is good advice or suggestions in 10 posts.

8 will accept it, go on with more knowledge.
1 will be someone that just refuses to accept even though they are the only 1 who believes them.
1 will be this case, not giving the full details. If they dad mentioned a 10 year ban from the start I would have been confident that it was not for “a simple misunderstanding”.

Helping the 8 far out ways the 2 problems.

I believe there is still a lesson in this for new readers. If you want help / advice we are willing to give it but please give us the details we need to help you.

If they have come on the forums asking for help / advice as they have been banned then adding the emails brings nothing new apart from clarity.

We all know that Niantics email wording is not always the clearest but advice from people such as yourself that have gone through this is invaluable.

Keep it up everyone, the 80% appreciate it.

It absolutely is helpful. I have a situation in my area where a building has changed hands / occupants have rebranded (not sure which, it was and is a church)… your comments on repurposing led me to report for removal (not yet resolved) and take pictures for a future replacement submission, rather than trying to edit.

I will say that sometimes editing is called for! I had another local case where the original submitter used a street name instead of the name of the apartment complex for a point in that apartment complex, and that has now been corrected. Another, also now corrected, referred to a map “of Australian provinces” when they are states.

@leopupp0505 Did you reach out to the Pokemon Go team? We are all wanting to know the outcome of that since your ban was not at all associated with Wayfarer, Also, we you planning to apologize to NianticAaron?

I appreciate the sentiment. However, there is no need for an apology. We all have strong opinions sometimes, and we respect the sentiments. I’m glad that I was able to point them in the right direction. Let’s put that energy back into the great ideas and discussions we see here.

Cheers!

It’s good that you can take that view and that it’s part of your Job but Frustration should not be used as an excuse for poor behaviour.
