Tier Progression Update

I’m mostly doing photos and just one per wayspot. A few where I have done the title and/or description.

I really need to do some photo edits… may do some either today or during the week. There’s a few locations that could do with better photos in my local area.

If you have an ingress account at high enough level it’s so easy to submit edits without resorting to spam.

I’m a level 12 agent, so opened intel and searched (primarily) for rural churches. I then opened up a deep link in prime. Many will have very weak (eg. “rural church”, “place of worship”) or non-existent descriptions. I would then write a better one.

Yeah sadly Go players cant do that

Wish we could, this challenge would be so much easier if we could!!

Keep in mind I’m just giving some possible situations, some that have even been discussed here in the forums before the challenge started. Yes, some here did say they were just going to go out and add or remove a character from titles/descriptions and submit them. Adding a period to the end of many titles that don’t need them, especially in English, could be seen as spamming the system and abusive behavior.

I’m not going to name people, but yes, there were those discussing how to spam the system before the start. Most were advised not to do so, as it could be seen as abusive.

So far, all my photos have been accepted by ML, and within about a minute. Will be trying to get out today and submit some more, especially photos, which I bet are helping the ML community rewards.

Well, colour me surprised /s

I’ve not done nearly as many edits as others. I had three description edits accepted quickly last night. I now have twelve others in queue.

I think my “casual mission” will be to improve, or even add, descriptions for churches and other houses of worship. I see many older POIs with no descriptions as well as newer ones that don’t say much more than “local church”.

I would not call that abuse spamming.

Here’s what you’ve submitted:

Wayspot: Stained Glass
Existing description: Stained Glass of Education Building of Good. Hope. Baptist. Church
Suggested edit: Stained glass window set in the Education Building of Good Hope Baptist Church

ML accepted this description edit to fix weird capitalization and punctuation. Not a frivolous edit.

Oh that’s definitely not a frivolous edit, yikes, much better now!!!

Seems as though Niantic is doing a little more reviewing now. I submitted 3 photos today, and 2 were approved by ML; the 3rd, along with the description I submitted for the Wayspot, went into Niantic voting. Niantic voting has been confirmed to be quality control, especially for ML, so can’t be too mad.

Should good when Niantic publish post about rules and politics add the link for access the site where that rules are wrote. In other post I did, they ask to me to follow the rules but that rules in the time of post where never wrote. Nia is the owner and they could accept or not this recommendation.

Hello,

Niantic does have their terms of service, player guidelines, as well as the Wayfarer abuse policy online, and they can be found at the following links:

Everything for Wayfarer can be found in the help section on Wayfarer, as well as at this link:

Hello, that’s great. The term spam is misused by Niantic. It’s clear that there is not any spam activity when the players send edits. I hope Niantic avoids writing more garbage about rules never written. It’s easy to only search in a dictionary the term spam.

Please don’t make definitive statements about things you don’t understand. Niantic wrote what they wrote for a reason. If you don’t understand the reasoning, it’s best just to stay quiet.

To the best of my understanding, there has never been a Wayfarer rule that explained ‘spamming’.

The team seemed to say that it was permissible to make changes or to re-submit the same nomination in hope of a different result.

I would not expect Niantic to accept silly edits, and don’t recommend that others should make them.

However, Tintino failed to explain what Niantic’s goal was from this challenge, and how we could best help to achieve it.

If they want to improve the way the Machine handles edit submissions, do they want the highest quantity, the highest quality, the most diverse pool, unique edge cases?

Since they never published comprehensive guidelines regarding orthography or best practices for text, it does seem a bit odd to set only a quantitative goal for the Edit Challenge, and then complain that some people aren’t shoveling the right kinds of coal.

Don’t they want the machine to learn the difference between good and bad edits?

Haha looking at it that way,you need a bit of spam to train the bot. If you feed it only the higest quality it will never learn what bad looks like

I think the community at large can discern the difference in somebody who might submit the same nomination a few times, do the same edit(s) a few times, compared somebody who sees this challenge and throws dozens of the same location edits or identical photos.

I do think (and wish) Niantic could better define “spam” because that is a problem year round and hasn’t just popped up, now.

I suppose I could have achieved the challenge after all

Just taking multiple of the same image didnt really occur to me, albeit some are similar ie different zoom, better light, etc

I think asking for so many edits in a short space of time basically incentivised spam in order to get the “required” number

Maybe the challenge could have been more realistic or had a component of quality as well as quantity to alleviate that

This was one of my similar images, but I prefer the new one… what do you think?
