Vet clinic murals inside exam rooms

You do need to be able to walk up and touch the PoI. Vets, nurses, cleaners, reception staff etc can do so, as can members of the public who take a pet there.

Not all PoIs have to be available to all members of the public and this does have pedestrian access to people who are permitted to be there

I do not agree that a vet office is a sensitive location, for me it is a place where sad things do happen but many positive interactions happen too and those would outnumber the sad ones. A sensitive location for me would be a graveyard or similar, which isnt the same. Most vet visits are routine and positive - checkups or vaccinations, weight checks and teeth cleanings.

I do agree that sensitivity and common sense apply.

Pokemon Go doesn’t require you to be at the exact location as there is a wide interaction distance. However for Ingress game play you sometimes do need to be on the Portal exactly. So not all games are the same.

More general points

There is in my opinion no absolute right or wrong response to a stressful situation - actually thank goodness that we can accept those differences.

This sort of thing is not written down in absolutes in Wayfarer terms either. Different cultures and different people will react in different ways, its an interesting one to debate and i think it benefits from not having entrenched positions but to be open to different views.
I think it should be a case of weigh up each case as it comes, take what is said about the location along with visual clues and maybe info from a website. That we each might have a different answer is ok…

I thought @NianticAaron recently made a statement about being able to see the poi but i can’t find that now. You are supposed to be able to recognize that you have arrived when you get there.

And you are definitely welcome to have your own opinion.

Many vet exam rooms these days have seating for the humans. While the photo from Google Maps I provided is not the nomination, the supporting photo showed an exam table and some cabinets. Besides, I don’t think someone with a walker or cane would be asked to stand the entire time their pet is being examined.

The description and supporting info both noted it was installed to provide a sense of calm for both the pet and the human.

Just want to say, as in Ingress player, we dont really need to be right on the point, thats only for overclocking and most players can’t vps activate anyways. We do however have less distance to work with. The only thing that would concern me with this is portal/pokestop scans. However between common sense and the sheer lack of accessibility to an exam room, I’m willing to bet that’s a non-issue.

The whole issue of a “great place to explore” seems to have gotten completely lost. First, not every mural, poster, wall paper, painting, or photograph is worthy of exploration. Secondly, the place needs to be publicly accessible- yes, there can be restrictions as to what constitutes a “public” group of people, but exam rooms are by their very nature restricted areas. And the argument that the employees can access the room when they want is hollow….the exam room in a vet or human clinic is not a place to explore for employee or client.
Being able to open an app and play when you are stressed or grieving is nice, but also not related to the three eligibility criteria.

Good thing exploration isn’t mandatory criteria ig, which is why you can thumbs down it and still approve a PoI.

The argument is less about is this great?, at this point, and more about is it acceptable, which can be vastly different things, under wayfarer criteria.

Well, if it isn’t a great place to explore, then it has to be either a great place to socialize or a great place to exercise……I would love a logical argument for how an exam room meets either.

To summarize.

Whether a vet exam room is a “Sensitive Location” is a judgement call that will vary from person to person when they vote. However that particular judgement actually has 2 levels, voting, and removal requests.

Interaction radius varies by game

Things don’t have to be accessible 24-7 to everyone, to be eligible as accessible to public.

That’s simply not Niantic’s offical stance on what accessibility means. I have seen breakrooms in factory floors with restricted factory access and locked communities have POIs. It’s a common misconception people post about to remove stops in places like that, only for them to never be removed.

I think I might not have been clear. Saying employees can access something is not enough, it has to meet one of the three eligibility criteria. My argument isn’t that it can’t be restricted only to employees. My argument is that an exam room is not a great place for employees to socialize, exercise or explore. I can get behind a common eating area at a factory if it meets the socialize criteria.

Of course it has to meet one of the 3. Explore, Exercise, Gather/Socialize

If you don’t think it meets, explore you’d thumbs down it.
I tend to think it meets, so would thumbs up it.

But the point being, that judgement is not about “Public Access” because by Niantic’s definition of that, it fits.

At ours the “bigger” rooms might have a single chair but most only have an exam table and a space for the vet/nurse’s computer and some equipment. You wouldn’t fit a 3rd human in easily let alone more furniture. Probably varies from practice to practice, but honestly cant imagine a full on sofa and armchair being inside an exam room in a vet around here (UK). Theres not even a sofa in thr waiting room, just some little wooden chairs lined up against the wall.

I do know American buildings tend to be a lot bigger so it probably varies alot. Probably also by the types of animal they specialise in ie maybe larger rooms if they see a lot of huge dogs

I tried to find images online of my vet’s rooms but theres not a lot. Thought you guys might be entertained by the tiny, run down spaces in what is actually a really good vet surgery and maybe see why to me this looks like a waiting area

So, artwork is acceptable if it can be explored. People may reject if they feel it is a cheap copy or has no artistic merit.

If it is artwork, it needs to be safely accessible by some subset of the human population of Earth without violating any rejection criteria.

Reviewers need to determine if the location is a rehabilitation center or safety shelter, if it interferes with operations or blocks emergency access to a hospital, or if it is sensitive in the manner of a gravestone or cemetery.

We also have the ADA - Americans with Disabilities Act - that require businesses to provide reasonable accommodations for those with disabilities. Even if it’s a folding chair, it meets accommodations for those that cannot stand for long periods due to a disability.

I completely disagree. If you have specific guidance that a small office space/exam room that is restricted to health care/veterinary staff and their clients for private consultations, please share.

All I know is “ Must be safe and publicly accessible by pedestrians (indoor or outdoor).”

An exam room is not publicly accessible, it is a restricted area. Waiting rooms are publicly accessible, exam rooms are not. If I wandered down the hall at my vet’s office into an exam room, I know I would be immediately asked to return to the waiting room.

If “a large number” of people are interested in the services offered by the vet and “leave promptly after the service,” then it would be beneficial as an advertisement.

However, if there are “numerous people” who are not interested in the vet’s services and never leave, then almost everyone will reject the service.

Unfortunately, let’s face it: wayspots that were fine in Ingress and other services continue to be removed from public parks and universities and replaced with NoGo Pokemon gyms due to complaints from the general public in PGO.
Most of the blame has been placed on trainer morale and compliance issues.
All of our games would not be possible without the tolerance of society.
Let’s consider the reasons for this.
And let’s consider the implications of an Ingress agent who has been playing for over a decade not nominating a hospital mural as a portal.
It is not because Ingress agents are fools who don’t know about that mural.
They are saying, “It’s a cool POI. But it’s a hospital.” It’s because they realize that it is.
And if there were Ingress agents who didn’t notice it, it’s because Google’s Niantic staff was competent enough to notice and promptly dismiss it.

Which you don’t need to use to neutralize a portal. I rarely use them since walking right on top of portals or resonators isn’t feasible much of the time, organically, even when it’s not in an exam room.

It may not be needed, but it is a game mechanic of a current Niantic game. For this reason (and for potential future games), Niantic has always made sure that the waypoint itself is physically accessible.

I want to point out that people are stating that the exam room needs to be a great place to explore. That’s technically not true. The mural inside the exam room is what needs to be a great thing to explore. Based on the size and originality of the mural, i would say it is a great thing to explore. Most original art exists for the purpose of exploration.
