Are Scout Groups wayspot eligible in the UK?

I was wondering if Scout Groups could be wayspots in the Uk theres one not too far from me which has been recently rejected so I was wondering if it Scout Groups did not meet the criteria.

Hello and Welcome @Mogmed

Scout groups fall under the K-12 intelligently. The rule is really focused on areas that are primarily for kids that are 18 or under.

It is mentioned briefly in a clarification:

Oh I see thank you although they offer programs from 6-25 ages im assuming since it is a gated area it wont be allowed. Thank you for your help.

No problem. It’s a good question. Please feel free to share other ideas or even your general area (if you are comfortable doing so). Folks here really enjoy helping people get new wayspots :grinning_cat_with_smiling_eyes:

Also note that gated things/places don’t necessarily mean they are ineligible.

Being a Cub then a Scout (over 40 years ago) this is one of the things I considered. I had remembered the ruling as just Schools but I took a look on the forums first and noticed the full criteria.

Guess the things I learned as a Cub / Scout has long since gone as I wasn’t prepared…

I think the guidance used to be more focused on schools, I’ve seen plenty of scouting and guiding wayspots about, some of which predate PoGo. I don’t personally feel like hunting them down..

I take the guidance as meaning anything targeted at under-18s, not just schools. There is of course a grey area, as some people do accept scout huts, and playgrounds and soft-play centres are generally acceptable.

I think the dividing line is places where /families/ go and places where children are dropped off at. The former is OK; the latter is not.

Scout huts (etc) appear in review; I reject them, but don’t check if they end up being added.

Well yes, playgrounds are a staple of Wayfarer.

I think that the point with schools - and possibly why they were specifically mentioned - is to stop kids playing PoGo when they should be concentrating on lessons. It does also keep non-pupils away from school grounds where they don’t have a right of access, i.e. to dissuade trespassing. I don’t think the K-12 rule is about not having players anywhere there might be kids.

I don’t know, but I would expect it’s more about not encouraging groups of adult to hang around at schools, scout huts and other places which are meant for children. Standing next to a school, staring at your phone and typing into it can be problematic.

The rule definitely doesn’t prevent having players anywhere there might be kids, just certain types of location.

Where I live…..Standing out side a school waiting and not staring at your phone typing would be the behaviour considered problematic.

But yes unfortunately we are where we are on a global basis with under 18s and schools.

So yes a dedicated scout or guide hut is not allowed.

Aw. That’s sad. I hadn’t nominated it yet but had thought we could nominate our Scout Hall as it is also a community use hall. It would possibly get more people to know that we still exist in the area. But yeah it makes sense I guess. Just really annoying when there’s limited things that even remotely would count and then they dwindle quickly due to different reasons :grimacing::pleading_face:
