New Wayfinder Rating System!

Hello Wayfinders,

We’re excited to announce the launch of the new Wayfinder Rating system (v2)! These new changes are designed to offer not only greater transparency but also provide a clearer path for progressing your rating. Additionally, this change will incorporate more of your activity within Wayfarer, moving beyond the sole focus on review activity. This new approach is built to recognize a broader range of your contributions:

  • Approved Nominations

  • Approved Edits (Title/Description, Photos, & Location)

  • Earned Agreements

We believe this change will allow us to acknowledge all the valuable contributions you do within Wayfarer.

The New Wayfinder Rating Levels

The new Wayfinder Rating now consists of 5 levels rather than the previous 4. This change allows us to better acknowledge and reward the nuanced contributions of Wayfinders like you. As you accumulate points, you will progress through the five distinct levels, each signifying your increasing success and dedication to the Wayfarer program. These new levels are:

Reflecting Your Past Wayfarer Activity

Your Profile Page now reflects changes that have been applied retroactively. Your new Wayfinder Rating incorporates all past accepted submissions, including accepted nominations and accepted edits for photos, text, and locations. Because the new rating system covers a wider range, the inclusion of approved nominations and edits means some users who previously held a “Great” rating may now find themselves in tiers such as Expert, Explorer, etc. Please note that this is purely systemic and does not indicate any negative behavior on the Wayfinders part.

How to Progress in Your Wayfinder Rating

Your progression in the Wayfinder Rating is based on the points you earn. These points will allow you to advance from Novice all the way to Champion, which is the new highest rating in the Wayfinder Rating journey.

Your score can be increased by successfully achieving the following:

  • Approved Nomination: +3 points

  • Approved Edit (Photo, Location, Title/Description): +1.25 points

  • Agreement (Reviewing): +1 point (agreement points will be awarded for agreements earned from nomination and edit reviews)

Please note you will receive points for your approved nominations and edits, regardless of whether they were accepted by Niantic or the community. This includes receiving points for nominations and edits approved on appeal.

Wayfinder Rating Perks

As you progress in your Wayfinder Rating, you’ll also unlock some exciting new capabilities. To kick us off, we’ll be adjusting the accrual rate and caps for Wayspot submissions and edits.

When you advance in Wayfinder Rating level, you will be granted the daily submission accrual rate of your level at the start of the day, plus the difference between your new level’s accrual rate and your previous level’s accrual rate. The accruals will be distributed at midnight UTC.

Note that more additions encompassing more of your Wayfarer activity will be coming soon as well as perks to unlock as you progress through the new Wayfinder Rating. Some things to look forward to are submission distance increases and more to be announced at a later date!

Wayfinder Rating + Wayfarer Medal in Pokémon GO

Previously, your agreements only contributed to your Wayfarer Medal in Pokémon GO when you were at Wayfinder Rating Good or Great. Starting today, you will now earn agreements toward your Pokémon GO Wayfarer Medal starting at the Novice Wayfinder Rating. This change will be retroactive, so your medal will reflect all agreements regardless of your rating at the time you earned it.

We believe this new system provides a more comprehensive and motivating way to track and acknowledge your impact on the Wayfarer map and other Niantic games.

We look forward to your feedback and how you’d like to see the Wayfinder Rating improve!

New Wayfinder Rating FAQ:

  • Is it possible to lose Wayfinder Rating points?

  • Is the previous Wayfinder Rating (great/good/fair/poor) still being tracked by Niantic?

    • While we will not be tracking the previous rating specifically within your new rating, we will continue to monitor Wayfinder review activity for several reasons. This tracking allows us to understand user reviewing patterns, identify suspicious activity, determine appropriate cooldown periods, etc.
  • Are we able to see our previous rating?

    • No, you will not be able to see your previous rating on your Wayfarer Profile page.
  • How will the new Wayfinder Rating impact cooldowns?

    • The new Wayfinder Rating will not be factored into submission decisions at this time.
  • How will I know if I have poor or good reviewing behavior now that the system has changed?

  • Will there be any in game rewards for hitting certain levels?

    • Currently, no in-game rewards will be granted for achieving specific levels. The only change introduced by this new system is to the Wayfarer Medal, which will now incorporate all agreements across all rating levels.
  • Can I see how many points in my rating came from different sources (e.g. How many from nominations, edits)

    • At this time, your Wayfarer Profile page only displays a single total points score. This score is calculated from all contributions, including accepted nominations, accepted edits, and agreements.
  • If I review a Wayspot edit which has a location edit, title edit and description edit bundled together, and I get agreements on each, is that 1 point for 1 review or 3 points?

    • If you review a Wayspot edit which has a location edit, title edit, and description edit bundled together and get an agreement for each, you will get 3 points.
