ML should have had nothing to do with it, although ML and Niantic approved Wayspots cannot currently become “featured.”
Do you have an Ingress account? The most common cause of this situation is that somebody was traveling, opened up Ingress if only briefly, and has not interacted since.
If this is the case, all you should have to do is log out of Wayfarer, open Ingress long enough to load to your location, and then go back to Wayfarer.
Some people do report that it takes longer for the “Featured” page to update, but it should within a few hours.
If you don’t have an Ingress account, try logging into any other game account that might be linked to the same email address. But, generally speaking, Ingress takes location priority.
