As anyone in the UK will tell you, postboxes encourage socialization because in the olden days when people didn’t carry phones with them, sending a letter in the post might be the only way that you could reach someone who wasn’t near their home phone when you called. Worse, if you were even a single area code away, you’d end up paying long-distance fees for phone calls, which made sending postcards a common way of socializing about exploration you were conducting while keeping costs economical.
While these socialization methods are nearly lost to the ages, exploration of history is an important aspect of wayfarer, and combined these factors make postboxes great candidates.
Unlike the ciphers you see in the UK, the styles you see in the US are a little different. Below, I’ll share how I review different styles of cipher that can be commonly found in the US.
The Single-Family Postbox
This postbox has a relatively unique cipher - 14271. While it’s located in a public easement, it’s created for use solely by a single-family residential property. Single family postboxes like this should be considered rejectable as SFPRP and should not be accepted.
The Single-Family Postbox Cluster
These postboxes also have relatively unique ciphers, though slightly more common. These get a bit trickier, and while they serve multiple families, each individual postbox is still single-family use. Similarly located in an easement, the property is typically not shared by multiple residences, but is provided by one for the benefits of others. Unfortunately, in the majority of cases these styles of postbox should still be rejected as SFPRP.
The Multi-Family Postbox Cluster
While this postbox cluster still contains single-family elements, there are three shared use boxes - two for packages, and one for outgoing mail. These multi-family elements transform this into an eligible nomination, though you still need to be careful about the location, as while many are located in shared areas, some are still placed on the easements of single-family properties, which will require consideration of local laws and regulations.
The Multi-Family Eagle Cipher Postbox
These artistic postboxes are less common than the other styles, but provide a great shared amenity that’s available to anyone, and have the added benefit of typically being decorated with cuter ciphers than you can find on others. This style is practically guaranteed to be located on a shared property. The artistic elements further elevate these as great for exploration, making them some of the best postbox nominations you can find!
If you’re reviewing a postbox in the US and wondering about eligibility of something not covered here, or if you’re planning on submitting one near you, I’d love to discuss these unique nominations further!
