Using the ‘I don’t know’ option when reviewing

Hi everyone. I have been wondering for a long time if choosing the ‘I don’t know’ option when reviewing a nomination reduces the number of agreements you have. For example, 70% of the nominations in my area are basic grafitti, which, seem to be accepted throughout the country, although their permanence is questionable. I have thus started voting them as I don’t know. However, although I still have a good rating, the number of agreements compared to my total reviews is very low. Could you please help clarify how exactly the ‘don’t know’ option affects the reviewing process? Thanks in advance!

I would be really interested to know this too

Niantic will never give us that information. BUT I use “I don’t know” on at least one section - usually several - on almost every review that I don’t outright reject, and my rating is “Great.” In fact, a lot of people with lower ratings will find that their rating goes up when they start using “I don’t know” more.

Agreements were coming in fast as they made adjustments for a bug, so this may be why you don’t seem to be seeing them come as quickly now.

This is a different issue than if “i don’t know” affects your agreements. Tags should not be accepted, even if the community is accepting them. There was a situation in the Netherlands where weird stuff was being accepted, and when Niantic started correcting the situation, I believe that people who had just started accepting what they saw going live were also caught up in the punishments. From all the posts asking for them to be restored, I think that Niantic is removing Wayspots that are just tags.

If you have questions about specific graffiti being acceptable or not, you can post them here. I know it is difficult to vote against what you see going live.

I do. Often.

When I can’t 100% determine if a nomination is accurate, because it does not show in maps while under trees, and the street in question is not in Streetview.
When I dont know if a place is a good place to socialize or exercise, just because I can’t really visualise it in real life.
When I can’t 100% determine if a place has safe and public access.
And if i have NO idea if it is permanent, which goes for almost all ‘wild’ graffiti.

Those and several other cases where it is not a hard ‘no’, so no reason for immediate rejection, but also not a hard ‘yes’ , because I don’t have enough information and was unable to Google it.

I basically leave it to other people then, and decide only on what I can determine out of the nomination, maps and google. I actually only deny when it is really clear :

  • obviously on private or school property or just a plain regular business or object, or in the middle of a busy road
  • the object is not in the area photo AND cannot be located in Streetview/maps or googling the item
  • very clearly a duplicate.

I am always on the conservative site, knowing how much effort people can put into a nomination and how hard it can be to find something in a rural area. Density DOES play a role in the back of my head when I decide.

I agree that density does play a role in the back of my head, but wanted to be clear for others reading along that I mean it more along the lines of “this would be significant in this community” than “I am going to let this slide because they need game locations.”

No, it is not about ‘letting things slide’. It is quite literally considering a bench or resting area on a long walking or biking route in nature, on a route that is not stapled with frequent trail markers, with nothing else in sight and no Wayports for hundreds of meters around it, a perfect place to rest while you exercise and explore. And occasionally I actually meet people there and have a chat, where I would not chat with them passing them on my bike (or, more likely, then passing me ). I literally couldn’t go out without those.

Whereas I would not approve any regular bench in a city or even village centre. (Unless it was a piece of art in itself).

I’ll fight for ‘my’ benches, even if it affects my rating. Benches along walking and biking paths in nature are THE perfect Wayspots in all aspects, and fulfill all the the pillars of Niantic : socialize, exercise, explore. Much, much more then a painted utility box, a shield on a wall, or graffiti in a dark scary tunnel, or an ugly dirty tail marker. So I will keep approving them until I drop, hoping in the long term I will be able to get them approved myself.

Fully agree with so much of what you say.

These scribbled on utility boxes seem an auto include.
