What’s my best chance for appealing this?

Hello, I recently subbed this beach scenic lookout, but it got declined by Emily. I’ve seen others appeal these types of subs and get declined for not having any signage. Can anyone possibly offer some advice on what I could say in the appeal?

Portobello West Beach Tower Lookout

A scenic viewpoint located at Portobello’s west beach. The viewpoint gives a raised view of the beach and the river Forth. The platform also resembles the battlement section of a castle tower.

The lookout is located on a public promenade, and is safe for anyone to access at any time. It provides a raised view of the river forth and in the distance, fife.

Very good supporting image, clearly showing that this is indeed a lookout and something distinct from elsewhere along the promenade.

The main image is visually dull, but that’s not on you, and this may be why eMiLy rejected, because it can’t be the narrative in this case.

Personally, I would emphasise that this is an place explicitly intended as a scenic lookout, which is pretty much what you already said in your submission.

You could also try a resubmission with a different photo (which you have to do anywhere if eMiLy rejected the first time). I’d go with a landscape photo so that you can remove the wasted space (sky and ground) in order to get past eMiLy and allow reviewers to take a decision.

Agree. The main photo may have been too tight on the platform to give context to the nomination.

@YelloWool I think this is a good case for an appeal. If you don’t have one available, or want to save them since they are limited (we get 2, each on a 15 day counter before they can be used again) a resubmit does not prevent you from being able to appeal either or both if rejected again. I would take a step back and add some context around the viewpoint, probably cropping the photo to square, but using landscape if square doesn’t look right. That will make it look more like a destination to be visited than a wall.

Is it possible these are actually wartime battlements? According to Extended Defence Of Britain Map there used to be a ‘heavy anti-aircraft battery’ here. ( eDoB Online Map - e25452 ) That’s not going to help you against eMiLy though without improving the pictures.

I found it on street view. This is the kind of photo I was suggesting you take. Still have it centered, but back up enough to give context that it is more than just a wall.

oh, got a better angle and deleted my first snip…

Good catch. Now that you have suggested this, this looks remarkably like a defence structure. Eligible under exploration if it is that, and would want a different description etc.

This shows the battery as disused on the 1914 map

I would be tempted to re-submit based on its history.

What map is this? There are more on the east promenade too so I’ll try to submit those ones too, would I just need to provide the map in the supporting info?

The dullness is just natural look unfortunately.

I won’t be able to submit another one there as I won’t be back for a while, so I’ll be appealing with as much info as I can, I’ve just seen others get scenic lookouts declined even with an appeal, due to something silly like not having a sign.

The National Library of Scotland is the source they have a very good digital library of maps of the whole of U.K. not just Scotland.:smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

I would not use that in the supplementary photo it would potentially be useful to include a link in the text, but also the site found by @tomwe above is a good reference to include as a link.

Love that site for all the different age of the maps.
