I want to nominate a football/soccer field but don’t know where exactly to place the marker.
Ideas I had were:
- on a goal
- right in the middle
- near the entrance
Any advice?

there are also guidelines at https://wayfarer.nianticlabs.com/new/help/location-guidelines
- Place the pin along the edge or entrance of large objects such as buildings and sports fields. Placement should ideally be at the natural point of approach, such as a gate or door

Placemarkers for Large Areas
Larger areas like dog parks or sport fields make great Wayspots, but it is important to choose the right placement of the Wayspot that respects the activity it was designed to support. Instead of placing the Wayspot in the center of an open field, park, or other large area, place it at the entrance or where there is a visible sign or placemarker. That encourages you to approach the area to visit the Wayspot, without having to enter or interfere with the activities within.
Trying to put all the relevant links on one topic. So much information is posted in so many different places! Welcome to the forum!
Thanks for all the input, the (kinda?) natural entrance is next to two other waystops. Would it be allowed/wanted to place it near the beginning of the running track (marked with the red dot) instead or would this be considered location abuse? That’s a bit unclear to me, since I personally think the wayspot would still be placed appropriately
Clarifying edit:
Blue - Existing wayspots
Purple - Entrance way
I honestly do not see a clear point of entrance for that specific field. In the absence of that, I would place the pin on one of the large goals at either end. That would still be off the playing field but clearly mark the field.
I would try the running track as its own wayspot and pin that at the beginning of the running track. It can be difficult to get a good photo to anchor a running track though.
Thanks for the advice! Yea it doesn’t have a clear entrance. The entire area has multiple entrances and is generally pretty open, which is why I was unsure at all
you did not ask about this, but since you have an option of where to put the pin over such a large area, i feel like i ought to make sure you understand S2 cells. are you familiar with how pokemon go uses S2 cells to determine if a wayspot can be used as a pokestop or gym? this is a good article if not: https://pokemongohub.net/post/article/comprehensive-guide-s2-cells-pokemon-go/
I’m aware of the concept of the cells but I wouldn’t know how to easily check this.
If you give the coordinates, I can use a third party tool to check. But I understand if you want to keep your location private. (We aren’t allowed to share links to third party tools on the forum, but so far they are allowing us to share screenshots from them.)
Coordinates of my proposed spot for the running field would be 48.805573, 11.493520, since it’s right next to a start/end.
Where as I would personally put the football/soccer field at 48.804805, 11.493190 since there’s a waiting spot between the running field and the goal. I don’t know if that’s appropriate though since I’m new to all of this. So far I’ve only dealt with clear POIs.
i love that you are approaching this issue from the standpoint of accuracy. i don’t think you would do this, but i always like to put out the caution that no one should use cell knowledge to pin something in an empty cell that isn’t actually there for game reasons. niantic considers that abuse. i don’t know who else will see this, so added that warning.
What a coincidence! Do you think I would be good to submit both as stops at my proposed locations with explanations as to why I put the pins there? I read some posts here and apparently it helps to explain the pins when there’s no clear entrance.
i will sometimes add a statement in the supporting like “there is no specific entrance for the field. pin at west goal avoids being in the field of play” or “pinned at starting block as shown in main photo.” i do not say anything like “PLEASE DO NOT MOVE PIN FROM CELL”
Thanks! It’s dark outside anyways so I’ll have to wait for tomorrow. Hopefully some other people can also slide in and drop their thoughts. I’ll probably go ahead and submit them tomorrow.
Hi @GabrielPBC
Welcome to the forum from me as well ![]()
If you already have your photos you can submit them through the new web-submission feature (new menue point on your wayfarer website) and don’t need to wait for daylight ![]()
Thanks for the warm welcome! I always use the web submission but I didn’t get photos yet ![]()
Others have given good advice and pointed to clarifications for this. I wanted to show examples in practice, using POIs at a local university. Many, but not all, of these were my own nominations.
There are numerous sports fields in this screen shot.
For the football stadium, the POI is the main entrance in the middle of its southern edge. There are other POIs about the stadium. The field house at the northern end is also a POI (outside the radius of POIs shown here).
The baseball stadium entrance (at its northeast corner) is the POI for this field. There are other POIs around it.
The POI for the soccer stadium is also its main entrance at the stands on the western edge of the field.
The Track and Field complex has an entrance archway at the southwest corner of the track and the POI for it is placed there. There are numerous POIs within it for various other track and field sports. The practice soccer field in the middle was never nominated as it usually isn’t lined and the goals aren’t permanently in place.
There are two practice football fields on the east side of the image that are POIs. The northern one is natural grass and has no signage. The POI is at the southwest corner of the field.
The southern practice football field is artificial turf. There is a sign for it, just to the south of it near the road and the POI is placed there.
There is also a partial practice field to the north of these two football fields but it is usually hard to distinguish from open grass so it’s not been nominated.
I hope this is helpful.
Replying to myself to show the POIs at the northern end of the athletic complex. I’m still keeping an eye out for something good to fill cells in the middle of the football stadium and along the western edge of the track. (I kind of could have something for the track but it is basically the same as on the western length, so I’ve passed on that.)
