Absurd Appeal Rejection after absurd nomination rejection

Hey y’all. A few months ago myself and a couple friends I play & bike with made submissions of the mile markers along a dedicated pedestrian & cyclists route through downtown Orlando. Most of them went have gone through, but several were rejected for strange reasons during the Global Challenge a couple months back.

Here’s a city article about the trail itself:

I have been slowly appealing my way through the decisions, but we have been getting strange results - some go through, some do not.

These submissions were made under the following two points, which have set my understanding of acceptance criteria:

(1) A quote from @NianticGifford in 2022 on the old forums, which read:

“As you are aware, we consider any marker on a hiking trail as acceptable since our goal is to have folks explore. Even a small marker on a trail will encourage players to cover more of the trail if there are more Wayspots on the way.”

(2) Trail markers criteria clarification state that mile markers and directional signs along trails are GREAT nominations, despite that they may seem “generic”:

Some of these have been marked as ‘unsafe access’ - which is patently absurd, as this is a trail through the city specifically built and maintained for pedestrians.

Others have been marked as ‘not distinct’, which contradicts the trail marker clarifications.

While I understand that some reviewers are unfamiliar with the criteria clarifications, I am shocked and appalled at the appeals team for upholding those rejections.

Example (1) of appeals not matching criteria clarifications:
Title: Cady Way Trail - 2.7 Mile Marker
Description: Mile Marker 2.7 along the Cady Way Trail, a pedestrian and cyclists route that traverses 7 miles through Orlando from Oviedo to Downtown.
Location: On the cyclists trail, directly next to a city park.

Example (2) of appeals team not matching criteria clarifications:
Title: Cady Way Trail - 3.6 Mile Marker
Description:Mile Marker 3.6 along the Cady Way Trail, a pedestrian and cyclists route that traverses 7 miles through Orlando from Oviedo to Downtown.
Location: On the cyclists trail where it runs between two neighborhoods

The appeals on these have contained the following text:

Three parts showing why this rejection is incorrect, please read all the way through:

(2) This is a location and mile marker on a city bike trail. It indicates that it CAN be used to help in emergencies, but it does not obstruct emergency services in any way. Here's a city article about the trail:

Here’s the rest of them:

What is going on here? Did something change in the trail market acceptances? Why are some of these getting through appeals, and others not? I understand reviewers don’t always know the criteria, but why are the results from the appeals teams so inconsistent?

I am genuinely bewildered and need some official clarification at this point.

Trail markers are great for exercise and exploration.

Unfortunately, I am unable to provide any further feedback on why these are being improperly rejected.

Yeah, I was not thrilled at the idea of taking all of my appeals until next year to get them in, and now they’re getting rejected by appeals so I don’t even know what to do.

To all of my knowledge these are slam dunk submissions. Really need Niantic experts to weigh in because either I am losing my mind, or the appeals teams need a talking to.

I’ve had similar inconsistency from my National Cycle Network trail markers - some accepted by the AI or the community, some rejected, and then of those, some accepted on appeal and some rejected

No pedestrian access is a funny one - have had that too for trails and also my friend had it for a couple of pedestrian bridges

So can’t really offer much help, but can say I’ve had the same happen here in the UK. I have now been able to get these items accepted but it took several tries.

They truly are. You’re probably best off resubmitting them. You can remote resubmit from 10km away in pogo or 25km in Ingress.

Yeah, I can kinda see someone who doesn’t really understand the idea of a mile marker serving as an emergency location reference point being confused - especially during global challenge where english might not have been their first language - but to mark this as “unsafe access” is just feels like system abuse by someone who doesn’t want waypoints getting in.

I bike this trail 3 times weekly, this is my eggs & stardust grind. I’ll go put them back in if I don’t get official word, but this has become a problem with review and appeals at this point. How many nominations do I need to burn? I do a lot of wayfarer and am frequently low on new submissions.

EDIT: Just got an email that the appeal for the 2.7 was overturned, looks like I have my official word. Appreciate you, mysterious benefactor  now just wondering if I have to wait and do this for the rest of them.

What are your supporting photos like? I feel doing an angle up Photo with a 0.7x zoom my help location.

So put your phone on the ground pointing slightly up next to the marker to see the area where the marker is and also to verify that marker is in that location. This also helps reviewers to match the location with StreetView.:+1:

My supporting photos are in some of the examples - they’re wide shot 0.5 zoom including the trail itself and nearby landmarks that will be visible from satellite view. I’m quite familiar with how to make good nominations.

If you pull up the ingress map for this trail, you will see that we have gotten most of the mile markers approved - which just makes these weird gaps and nonsensical rejections even more frustrating.

To be fair, those are not actually trail markers for the purpose of guiding people through the trail. They are emergency services markers to help people tell the police or ambulance where to find them if they have an emergency. They are not the same as a true trail marker. You can find these along trails, but also across US college campuses.

I generally agree with you with some of the emergency marker signs, however these do have mile markers on them. To me, they’re definitely more towards the “accept” than “reject” even with your reasoning.
