Does anyone know if there’s a way to replace a main photo with a better photo for a pokestop of my own that was already approved?
You need more vote. Get your community help vote. Basically each photo have its own right to be main photo. You cant expect your photo to be main photo with less vote. If the photo is very bad(blur, dark, or got identifiable person), you can ask for removal, but if its good, then you need more vote.

Do you know how often this updates? I have been trying to get my local bowling alley’s picture updated since it rebranded the logo. The image has 4 or 5 likes at this point and none on the original, but it hasn’t updated in several weeks.
As far as I am aware it’s the total votes.
The old photo could include votes from the last 10 years including “hidden” votes that came from Ingress before the split.
It’s a process that I wished Niantic would change.
IMO: Votes should only count for a specific time say 2 years. This would allow new up to date images to rise to the top.
I believe that you can use Help Chat to remove images that no longer represent the waypoint but I have never tried this myself.

Ask your local community to upvote the foto. But you need to know that next time you want to change the foto again, you need to ask even more people. Personally i just accept it. New and old foto is ok imho
I think that the issue with new pokestops syncing is is also preventing the disc photos from updating, if you are certain that it has enough votes to become the cover.
If the old photo on the disc is bad enough that the photo should be removed completely, you can ask help chat to remove it. Be aware that they will make the decision they feel is best for the Wayspot, which could include removing the Wayspot itself if they feel it meets removal criteria or if they feel the Wayspot has been repurposed.
