Are humans allowed in main photos - Niantic Showcase thinks so - have rules changed

So I was going to do a review when I saw the Grassy Gnoll at North Bondi nominated. Officially known as Bidigal Reserve. Pretty cool spot with picnic shelters, awesome mosaic art etc and an awesome view of the beach. Already has a host of nominations accepted across differing games etc etc

But the main photo has someone in. On click on full view of photo I was like I know this geezer. Works for Waverley Council.. Now forgive me if I am wrong but err should you be able to recognise people you know in a photo???

’ Cause if not the automated selection of showcase images is flawed once again. And accepted nomination process ain’t so good. Unless rules changed recently which case. Soz

***Mod Edit - the photo has been edited to remove the players IGN

Id argue that hes not fully recognisable in that photo unless you have an amzing zoom and enhance function lol

It uses to be that peoplw could be in the photos if they werent tbe main focus and they werent too wasy to identify as certain things would be nearly impossible to take photos of without people there (like rhe eiffel tower for example), so i tend to stick to that whole reviewing

The photo guidelines still list these 2 reasons as to why a nomination should be rejected:

  • Includes prominent people, body parts, or live animals
  • Photos with recognizable faces or license plates

Basically, if you can make out the person and could possibly identify them, the nomination should be rejected. If there’s a person with their back turned, it’s going to be harder to identify them, or if they are from a far distance away you might not be able to make out their features.

I don’t think ML catches these all the time, but reviewers should have, and the submitter should have known better. The person in the background is pretty easy to make out, and I bet if you opened the full photo up during review, you could easily see their face. An easy fix to this would have been to crop the person out of the main photo or ask them kindly to move out of the way to get the photo.

The tough part of this is that Wayfarer won’t remove the photo until a new photo is added to the Wayspot. Checking the cells in this area shows that they already have plenty of Wayspots, so there’s already going to be a stop in PoGo, so the only nope of getting a new photo added would be if this gets used as a Power Spot, but, of course, no guarantee there. Here’s the cell in Ingress, showing 4 existing Wayspots already there, and about where this Wayspot would be:

To my understanding of the criteria, I would recommend asking for this photo to be removed. You’ll likely have to provide a new photo, though.

This wouldn’t be the first time an an invalid wayspot made it into the the showcase. They’re chosen by algorithm, not by people. Even so, it’s shocking that this was approved - it’s one of the simpler reasons to reject.

I wouldnt have rejected it personally, that face isnt easily recognisable, especially not on a phone screen

We are only seeing a screenshot, which isn’t full resolution. I wouldn’t be surprised if in the full res photo you can make out the face. Also, there’s software these days that can enhance photos to clearly show someone’s face better, so that’s another thing to keep in mind; someone could still use the photo for unlawful reasons.

Photos are used in different ways in different games, so even if you (say) can’t see the face in PoGo, it doesn’t mean that it won’t be visible in some other game. The only way to be sure that a recognisable person doesn’t appear in-game is to make sure that the data never games in to the Wayfarer database in the first place. Same thing goes for license plates.

Spot on. It I cannot add a photo from PGO as there are multiple other noms there in game. Murals, War Memorial, Mosaics etc

The nom would be valid but for the human in my view.

Re taking photo. I have changed my angle to put the human behind the nomination. And I often only do noms early morning when less people around. I try to derisk any nomations by ensuring no humans parts

I feel rotton reporting it as abuse as you know - I think a mistake or rushed job. Which is easy for any of us to do. And I am grumpy I guess as it is a featured nomination which will only make many people go - so its OK.

Thanks for feedback all  Happy Friday

I have added the photo. Cropped out the person..

Something was bothering me about the photo. See my arrows. There is something else about the photo that smells. I have not seen those there. And it looks fake or the camera did something to its photos..

Weird – I will go down next week and check it out.
