If all the benches are within view of the water, they can all be helpful in reducing stress. Reducing stress can be a major part of inspir8ng exploration.
Sorry, I beleive that to be a poor argument.
Exploration can be a major part of reducing stress, not the other way round.
Never seen in the criteria that if something reduces stress that it eligable.
You asked why would we approve 6 benches along a river instead of just 1. This is what would go through my mind. There absolutely is a health benefit to an outlook over water. I don’t see any reason why all 6 wouldn’t be eligible.
I 100% explore to find stuff like benches near water because it relaxes me. The act of exploration does not relax me.
I am glad that you do find it relaxing but I don’t think that is criteria to make something eligable. I would be looking for something different that makes 1 bench distinct. 6 benches all the same looking at the same river is not distinct.
Many people have many different ways to relax, many would sit in the park watching the world go by. Should we accept every bench in the park?
In regards to exploring, in terms of Pokemon Go this can be just a simple walk. Many people would take a walk to releive stress.
I walk along the Mersey frequently ( lovely walk water, trees, rain) the trans Pennine trail is what I’m following, a very long distance trail, and there are benches along the way. In the section I am referring to, I don’t see any difference between those benches and the ones I walk past in the park. There is no substantial difference between them, the bench is the same the view is pretty much the same ( not much to see of the river) I’m not submitting those.
At the weir there is a viewpoint with benches. That would be ok it is designed to be a viewpoint and benches happen to be there. It took me 4 goes to get the benches at the picnic area accepted.
More generally about this discussion….
The usual Wayfarer principles apply.
The submitter needs to make a solid case as to why “this” bench is worthy of consideration, linking it to criteria.
It is up to each reviewer to assess if a case has been made, if it meets criteria and to choose
if it’s a good nomination, I don’t know if it’s good enough maybe the odd reservation, or
if no case is satisfactorily made. All of this requires the judgement of the reviewer. And if you just don’t feel comfortable you you skip.
I don’t feel there is a need to dive deeply it each type of situation where a bench may occur. Just stick to basics
I don’t have a good answer for this. The “clarification” examples are not meant to be all inclusive and tend to show the extreme in either way. As Wayfarers, we’re expected to deal with a lot of grey areas. Sometimes, that means what might be acceptable in one location isn’t in another, and knowing how to apply that in the middle situations.
I try to avoid absolute answers, especially where I’m not familiar with. A bicycle and walking trail along a creek and through the woods within a metro that I frequent has a similar situation, though. Often, I do see people using the benches - sometimes in solitude and sometimes in company. To them, and to me, these have become endearing points of interest that facilitate trail use in their own way and have importance. But, like your argument, I struggle to think that all of them should be individually eligible. I guess ideally there would be a single focal point or heck a lovely sign that ties them together? But if there was just one, I would certainly have said it’s eligible. Which of course brings the weird paradox of how having more than one somehow makes them ineligible.
For elderly I see, I know they would not be using the trail if they didn’t have rest areas. For me, sometimes it’s just the spot I sit to get my feet off the concrete and pretend I’m not in the city. It might not be much, but I do think that counts for something.
I’d bet the home and cucumber were added to the queue by Wayfarer, to check reviewer competence. They started doing that years ago, maybe 2019. If you passed either, your Wayfarer rating would tank.
Interesting point about health benefits : since you brought up something a little similar I’ll say something that I been reluctant to bring up here for a while for a number of reasons. Benches on paths promote exercise. A path in a park isn’t a great place for exercise if you can only walk a hundred metres (or whatever distance) at a time without taking a break. I haven’t gotten to this point myself quite yet, thankfully, but I’ve been aware of this for a while having had physiotherapists in my family. Even if people agree that what I’ve said is obvious, does it change the eligibility of a bench if it promotes exercise? Do we care because it only makes a path a good place to exercise for old fuddy-duddies like … well, like we all are gonna be eventually? Personally I have only nominated benches that are about a notable person or institution, but I have been disinclined to reject them when reviewing because I remember times walking around various places with elderly relatives.
I am at the age that I am slowing down and health issues mean that I am regularly being overtaken by people much older. ![]()
Parks are used for exorcise in many ways, walking, running (park runs? ), outdoor exercise equipment, sports and they may all use a bench after they finish to get their breath back.
Just because the benches may be used during / after exercise doesn’t mean they have to be in the game. I will often lean on a post, some may sit / lay on the grass during / after exercise, doesnt mean they should be waypoints.
Plus parks tend to be one of the most waypoint populated areas. I will occasionally visit our town park during Wednesday Raid Hour and sit at an RAF Bench that is a stop. From there I can reach 3 Gyms (Bandstand, Rock Garden, Cenetaph) and 2 extra stops (Information Monolith, Memorial plaque). Many of the other waypoints will have benches close to them so no need to nominate a standard park bench aswell.
I think the guidance on memorial benches used to be that isolated ones were OK, so a bench in the middle of nowhere would be potentially eligible. One of the reasons that memorial benches were not favoured was that it led to overcrowding of wayspots. The guidance seems to have shifted again, but it would be good to have isolated benches as being more eligible.
There have been a few submissions where the bench has been used as an anchor for a scenic viewpoint, I like that idea but have no idea if it works in practice.
6 days later, the same thing is still in voting as was mentioned in the first post.
I think its actually a gherkin - pickled cucumber.
I just marked that one as Abuse. Wondering whether it’s Scopely testing us, someone playing around or a test submission that slipped through the net is just too much effort.
Yeah I wasnt sure if abuse was correct since the list of options under it are more about being abusive towards people, even though this is clearly wayfarer abuse. So I reported as fake instead. Lol. So many options for this ![]()
It doesnt seem a very good test really - surely this would get a 100% rejection/report rate?
I assume its a child. Or someone very silly
Apparently it’s against the rules to question the intelligence of LLMs, these days…
Yes, I’m sure Scopely will keep using the “honeypot” system that Niantic has used since 2019.
From Niantic Wayfarer - 1 Month Check In – Niantic Labs :
We’ve also taken steps to pre-approve or reject certain Wayspot nominations prior to them entering Wayfarer. Reviewers who disagree with our assessment may see a dip in their performance score.
@cyndiepooh You’re awesome at keeping up with references. Could you please save off the 2019 blog that introduced honeypots? Also anyone else who collects Wayfarer explanations!
(“Honeypot” is our slang for using planted pre-decided things to test reviewers. Because the answers should be easy like eating honey.)
Soon I won’t be around to remind people anymore.
Ingress/wayfarer players will continue to access this forum if they want to.
Thanks! I know. I’m sure I’ll drop in every now and then, to see “what’s up” with the community, and Pikmin Bloom wayspots. ![]()
made a note i hope i can find again later
