Do I really need to waste an appeal on this?

Why would a description get rejected over no description at all? There does not appear (to me anyway) anything that would seem offensive or incorrect.

Um :thinking::thinking:
It sounds a lot better than what was there :sunglasses:

Thatā€™s what I thought.

Maybe Niantic thinks silence is golden? :joy:

I wonder if the automated system rejects it due to the specificity of the service, or the departments listed. I could see it shortened to something like:
ā€œRichard served as a US Navy combat air crewman during WWII in the Pacific theater, followed by a 32 year career in various department roles.ā€

No, that wouldnā€™t cause a rejection. Many of the logos that are murals at US military bases and for specific units get nominated from time to time with the specific unit name and branch, and they usually meet criteria. Thereā€™s nothing that says you canā€™t state what branch or unit the POI represents.

Yeah, interesting that this wouldnā€™t be accepted over no description. My only issue with it is saying ā€œHeā€ instead of using Richardā€™s name at the beginning, but thatā€™s just me, and I wouldnā€™t reject for something small like that.

Also, I just wonder if the community is getting tired of edit reviews.

That makes sense! I think you may be right in that it may be related to the community skipping these or just flat out rejecting them. Iā€™ve been seeing a lot of really low quality edits for descriptions and thereā€™s no easy way to actually submit an alternate edit on there without just rejecting the edit

This was rejected by eMiLy, back when we did the challenge. I just had an appeal available and so I was going through some of my rejections and ran across this one. More than likely Iā€™m just going to resubmit.

I thought about using ā€˜Heā€™ instead of his name could come off wrong, maybe thatā€™s what triggered the ML reject.

Not in the Edit challenge but I too attempted to update a very old wayspot from not having description to having one, only to have it rejected by Emily.
I had another go in The edit challenge, and itā€™s still in community voting.

Really ML? Really? I canā€™t find anything that would meet rejection criteria, except maybe the word ā€œcombat,ā€ but thatā€™s what he was during WWII, and itā€™s not offensive or illicit in anyway. Would gunner not be allowed for an airplane or helicopter gunner?

I mean, the appeal is up to you, since you have one available. Iā€™d think it would be accepted on appeal, but of course, no guarantee.

If you have the appeal, I think it would be good for the community to use it on this. Several of us have been saying that ML should not be used to reject text edits. It does not have the understanding a human reviewer would have.

If it makes you feel any betterā€¦

Does not really make me feel better, just makes me think that there is not something in the algorithm that says ā€œa description is greater than no descriptionā€. Maybe that is something that needs to be taught. As long as thereā€™s no banned words.

I donā€™t know how ML works. I donā€™t know if it is capable of fact checking.

I can say ā€œa description is greater than no descriptionā€ wouldnā€™t be as good as it sounds.

Yes I doubt that the algorithm goes and checks the details. And a blank original provides nothing to compare.
So in my opinion these shouldnā€™t be outright rejected but pushed to a human be it wayfarer staff or the community to see if it is good.

I think ML should definitely trumpet the alarm if there are any band words. Donā€™t fret, I donā€™t think youā€™re in treble over this. You could probably get this overturned but the victory would be cymbalic. Though, we can always learn from a good percussion about this issue.

I felt a bit strung along with this responseā€¦ It put the wind in to my beat.

It might have struggled with ā€œSeimmingā€?!

I have some rejections as well from doing edits that had no description before.
