An actual former plantation is historical, and rare.

From 1890-1970, memorials were placed in town squares and other public places where no battle occurred, to intimidate Black people. Like at the courthouse, or city hall! Many of these have been removed in the past ten years.

The modern equivalent is to name subdivisions or shopping places with “Plantation”, where no plantation ever existed. “Certain people” would not want to live in a neighborhood with “Plantation” in its name. Or work at a store, or whatever. It’s not-so-subtle discrimination.

I just ran across another one that I am rejecting under Sensitive Location (because I don’t think there’s a better rejection reason for it).

It’s a monument at a Civil War battlefield. So I had to think about whether it should be eligible because it marks a battle that legitimately happened. But what pushed me to reject it is the organization that sponsored it.

I’m going to assume that the person submitting this did not leave the sign messy to try to obscure the link to the United Daughters of the Confederacy. But the fact that this is the organization that sponsored this marker is enough for me to determine that this is about glorifying the Confederate soldiers, not about teaching lessons that should not be repeated.

If it’s about the Confederacy, it’s certain the plaque was from the United Daughters of the Confederacy or similar naming group.

If it’s from the United Daughters of the Confederacy, it’s about promoting racism, not about teaching people about the civil war.

I’d like to trust in what’s posted on the forum, and I have indeed referred to clarifications on the old forum in the past when submitting and reviewing.

However, even with the new Criteria Clarification Collection that’s been posted, it appears that both reviewers and Niantic’s team alike seem to selectively ignore what’s been posted here, even though the information should be both a trusted source and a useful resource. If both regular reviewers and Niantic internal reviews are ignoring it when they feel like it, what’s the point of it existing?
