“Generic Business”

What would be considered “generic business”?

I think a place like Dunkin’ Donuts or a good will should be considered “Generic Business” but is this right? And if so, then should ‘chain’ karate dojos be considered a “Generic Business” as it isn’t a unique place. But I have seen people put a chain karate dojo as a nomination. Would that be unacceptable or would it be acceptable? I just want to be as accurate as possible and not falsely flag a stop if it could be accepted.

Also, Chinese restaurants are tricky for me, i know that Panda Express would be “Generic Business” but would a small town’s Chinese restaurant be acceptable? And this also goes for a non-chain diner or non-chain restaurant. Would any of those be considered “Generic Business”

Under many situations, a chain or franchise will be considered a “generic business.” It should also be used for a “generic business” that isn’t a place for socializing, exercising, or exploring. A department store or oil change are typically what I consider examples of a clear cut generic businesses.

Even fast food restaurants and chains can be acceptable, typically in situations where it’s a rural setting without many dining establishments or there is something otherwise notable about them to the local community.

We do have this clarification that briefly explains: Forum Criteria Discussions Library — Wayfarer Help Center

Basically an ordinary business that does not otherwise somehow meet criteria.

There is a clarification that business location that offer exercise should be consiered as a great place to exercise.

Please note that locations that promote exercise can be considered eligible Wayspot.

The part where you’ve mentioned “If the purpose of a wayspot: Is exercise promotion, then a clarification needs to be issued that business’s that promote on-site exercise are eligible as long as they don’t belong to a big chain so reviewers know to accept the same way they would a trail marker, or sports field.” - I’ll share this feedback of yours internally.

For the last line “Should a Dance Studio or Gym be judged like a Restaurant? Or should it be judged like a Baseball field or trail marker? Which is the more apt way to look at business that people exercise on site?” - Gyms/Dance studios/etc. business promoting exercises need to be reviewed as a place of exercise which is an eligible spot.

Even if they are chain, they are still considered a great place to exercise, and on appeal they usually get approved, like this one example

The way I choose to frame generic business is “a business that meets no criteria, ie is not a great place to exercise, socialise, or explore”

For example a supermarket is a generic business in my opinion.

A karate dojo or really any exercise related business would be a great place to exercise regardless of whether its a chain brand or not, so this can be submitted and accepted (although reviewers often reject these incorrectly)

Its also worth noting that generic businesses can still contain eligible nominations so for example unique artwork inside, or a community noticeboard could still be eligible at a generic business

I feel obliged to point out I had to appeal the appeal on the Pure Gym submission. The community rejected it, the appeal reviewer rejected it, so I went down the unofficial route of querying why it was rejected, as there is no official route for appealing an appeal. Fortunately, we have been told at some point that we should post when we get a rejected appeals which feels egregiously wrong.
