Under many situations, a chain or franchise will be considered a “generic business.” It should also be used for a “generic business” that isn’t a place for socializing, exercising, or exploring. A department store or oil change are typically what I consider examples of a clear cut generic businesses.
Even fast food restaurants and chains can be acceptable, typically in situations where it’s a rural setting without many dining establishments or there is something otherwise notable about them to the local community.
