I saw this as the showcase
It is here Google Maps
This looks wrong. It looks like it is plastered on as a sticker at best. You can see through it. Everything reeks around this? Particularly as a private bench memorial for Sir Russell. Is there someone in the area that can look?
Does anyone else have a view on this? Am I just a cynic? I am not even sure how it passed really!! The POI has a host of other valid waypoints. But back to the nomination. If this is fake (and I think it is) then it is also in very poor taste using a memorial notice. And if a fake - then probs not good it is also showcased!!
I have also done a search online but found no mention of this. I hope to be proved wrong.. I really do want to be wrong.. But
Why would there be such a new plaque for someone who passed in 1995?
Itâs plausible because the aerospace musuem (with a Concorde!) is not far away but I would expect a bench like that to be on the museum grounds.
This area of âPatchwayâ is built on part of the former Filton Airfield (which also houses the museum) so it does have a direct connection to BAe and Concorde. That having been said, thereâs really good and recent StreetView imagery - Google Maps - and the plaque canât be seen. Itâs one of those where youâd really need the supporting photo.
Incidentally, itâs a pretty new development dating from around 2018, I looked on Google Earth and that crescent shape was there when it was an airfield.. this shot is from 1999.

Heâs a real person and the information and dates are accurate, so unless there is evidence of something being wrong, it seems entirely plausible that there would be a memorial bench to this person somewhere. If the area has links to the industry then it seems reasonable to me.
Recently a memorial bench around here was replaced with a new bench and it had a shiny new plaque for the same people on it, so these things do happen and the bench would have been approaching 30 years old. Doesnât sound unreasonable to me.

maybe. But the plaque is like see through. I have never seen a see through (almost translucent) memorial plaque. I hear you. Famous place. Famous plane.
But the plaque says in loving memory. So that to me is more like a personal bench.
He was not the Chief designer. Pierre Satre was. Russell was his assistant essentially though he was Chief Designer at the British Aircraft Company.
I remain suss on it until I can get more info on it .. Doubting Thomas that I am
As for updating plaques on benches. If you have ponied up for a memorial plaque then if the council replaces a bench you would expect it to be replaces. Nearly all councils rent the plaque space out for x period depending on what you paid. Unless of course a formal plaque. Nuances and all that
See through? Oh, the image looked shiny silver to me with a phone shadow in the middle? See through sounds wierd.
The article I found had mentioned he was really senior in the company, in charge of stuff, so it sounded reasonable enough. You never know how people describe themselves to their loved ones too lol
I suppose its 2 different approaches - I believe stuff that seems reasonable, and youâre doubting stuff till itâs proved. I donât think either is bad.
I see what you sayâŚ
This is what I see -straight shadow lines as the plaque is not solid
And I do not see family putting this here. And I have never seen one stuck like this. But it is a metal bench. Still
Nor was he the chief engineer for Concorde. Just saying
yes love to see the supporting photos!!!
wow. nice work on the old airfield and overlay. Used to drive past the airfield back in the day. Be driven. I was a child
driving would have been a challenge
can see the bench on streetview. As for the Brits forgetting the French were involvedâŚ. Seems pretty realistic to me!

The street view from the otherside does not show the plaque either. And google view up to date
There are no records online of a memorial plaque here. Sir Archibald Russell has several plaques to his name including the ubiquitous blue plaque
I have been in an area where people have faked plaques like these very successfully.
And yes to Brits forgetting the French had a part to play here
But that also goes to my point on the description not being correct either.
Hence why I am totally suspicous of this. Unfortunately I fly out today otherwise I would have popped down to have a butchers.
As @shritwod said. With no supporting photo this becomes hard to really dig into hence my wondering if there were any locals who could have a look see. I am almost tempted to dig up his family to ask them if they did it. But I feel that would be pushing the Wayfarer envelope too far. That said I will be pretty peed off that if this is fake they are using a person to do so. Another reason love to have a local to view and to see the supporting information.
Reminding self this is just a game. And again wanting Wayfarer to ensure showcase is not automatic and that it is used properly to showcase quality and great examples of what make great waypoints. As the showcase will impact how people nominate and review.
And I could be totally wrong. So lessons to be learned all round! And underscores why personal memorial death plaques should be avoided as indicated by wayfarer rules.
