Missing gyms at the Marine Corps Museum

When submitting a Wayspot Appeal, make sure to include as much of the following information as possible:

  • Wayspot Title: Lieutenant General “Chesty” Puller
  • Location (lat/lon): 38.543984, -77.341132
  • City:Triangle, VA
  • Country: United States
  • Screenshot of the Rejection Email (do not include your personal information):
  • Additional Information (if any):this Gym, along with dozens of stops and a bunch of other gyms were erroneously removed on 19 June 2025. This was a request of the US government/Marine Corps for the Quantico Marine Corps Base but went beyond the boundaries of the Base removing gyms and stops from the MCM, a county owned park just south called Locust Shade Park, and additional Gyms/Stops just north of base. There was no timeline given making it obvious this was akin to a large eraser used when a fine eraser was necessary. Please correct.

Hi @TwistedShortbus
I’ve edited the title of your request.
Let’s wait for a staff response. Good luck!

Hello,

This most likely is related to this thread, where some of the US Marine locations had Wayspots removed:

Quantico was one of the installations being mentioned of having Wayspots removed. There were both on and off base Wayspots removed at these locations.

Probably related, but did staff ever mention what was going on with the “off post” part of on and off post? There have been a few posts about this general area, but when Quantico seemingly got all of its stops removed, it looks like everything within a sizeable area near the perimeter of base also got removed, as in a couple hundred meters. A whole park under a different authority had everything removed seemingly just for being next to Quantico, a local brewery with art got removed, a church, and several other places. Not sure why this was done so imprecisely when OSM has a nicely defined boundary for Quantico that all of these things are outside of.

Staff cannot publicly discuss any removals that have come from a property owner and/or manager, and that is what they noted was the case.

Again, please read this thread, as the community at Camp Lejeune was able to work together to get some of their off-base Wayspots returned. You may want to contact those that manage the museum to see if the Wayspots can be returned, or even speak with whoever is in charge at the base. Only the property owners/managers can request modification and ask for the Wayspots to be returned.

I see that this Wayspot is back on the gameboard as a Gym.

Hate to push my luck after a month of being gaslit but what changed that we got that back?

I understand your frustration @TwistedShortbus Please know that it is absolutely not our intention, nor would there be any reason, for anyone on our team to mislead or ‘gaslight’ our community.

When a situation like this arises, especially when it involves requests from property owners or managers, our ability to disclose specific details is often limited. This is why you might see general statements or a lack of detailed explanations regarding why certain Wayspots are removed or, in cases like this, reinstated.

What I can tell you is that when an issue of this scale is reported, we open an investigation. The duration and outcome of such an investigation can vary significantly depending on the nature of the request and the ongoing dialogue with the relevant parties. We understand that the lack of immediate, detailed information can be frustrating, but we are working to address these situations as thoroughly and responsibly as possible within those limitations.

We appreciate your patience, and we’re glad to see that ‘Lieutenant General “Chesty” Puller’ is back on the gameboard.

It didn’t take long for the PoGo Community to put together that this was almost definitely a request by the Marine Corps Base (or higher USGov). The resistance to give out this information was frustrating because the USGov should not be granted the same protections from disclosure that a private owner or like entity. Your policy is your policy and I can’t fight that, just make my opinion clear.

Where the insulting gaslighting went into full effect was after this was acknowledged in game under help and we (the community) pointed out how far the overreach was and were told it was out of their hands in HELP but that we could go to a ‘removals’ website and try there because we were talking about stops that had been removed. It was clearly the wrong website and it wasn’t until a month later that another player pointed out the Wayfarer website I ended up using.

Additionally, while this was all starting, a different player pointed out that two stops were still on base despite everything else had been wiped. Two Stops? Two Sponsored Stops! One for Starbucks and One for MacDonalds. It was so important that you all couldn’t push back against the USGov (reasonable, I’m not denying that) request about how players are saying there was overreach but not so important that you couldn’t leave TWO SPONSORED STOPS up! Disgusting.

No public apology has been made to the community for the overreach. Why would you? We aren’t the customer, we are the product. Hopefully we don’t get tired of that.

You really need to calm down.

That is the correct and established process as we have been told repeatedly here as well.

No it wasn’t a wrong website.

They are legally bound to respect the requests of the property owners.

This is speculative. You don’t know if they did or not. On the contrary, I believe they did. This is why we have seen reports suggesting the return of some Wayspots that were earlier removed. This case seems like another example.

Again, you have no idea about the discussion and how Sponsored Wayspots fit into that. This is speculation without any shred of evidence.

I don’t believe they need to apologise. They have tried to help all along ever since the first report emerged.

Please speak for yourself. This community has more staunch players than you think.

There is no need to snap on the very people who helped you.

Please keep in mind that Wayfarer is a global product, so users come from all around the world. What may upset one may not upset others here. Many countries don’t allow Wayspots on or near military bases, as many outlaw photography and video of any kind, ban from for security/satefy concerns, or the use of personal devices on or near the bases. Some may even restrict off-base housing and there could be a number of reasons for this, such as the ones listed above. Most from these countries realize that they do have to play any of the games elsewhere, where the military doesn’t have jurisdiction, so they may have to take a bus ride into the nearest city that does have Wayspots or play while out running errands, for example.

The US Marine bases that were affected are such a small portion of the world, and the issues there certainly didn’t affect me and many others. We certainly understand how upsetting and frustrating it can be to lose Wayspots, but being a request came from someone with authority to request the removals, there’s little that any of us here can do.

I really applaud the users at Camp Lejeune for teaming up together to get some of their Wayspots back. Most were off-base, and most could accept that the on-base ones may not come back, but at least they did get some back and are able to enjoy playing PoGo again. They put in the work to see if they could get some Wayspots restored, and they were able to do so.

Not every US military base/installation was affected by this, as we were only able to pinpoint 4 that were affected. I myself know that the US Air Force base closest to where I live still has all of their Wayspots to play at, as I asked that community via Campfire about it when I was in their area during the 4th of July.

You are more than welcome to take this issue up with the US Marines and Dept of Defense if you’d like, as no one is stopping you. Yes, it’s not the most fair situation, but if there is an organization that has jurisdiction over an area and the authority to request removal, they are welcome to do so. They are also able to request modifications of Wayspots, so they may have asked for the restoration of some off-base Wayspots after having users ask about them.

Again, we understand it’s frustrating to lose Wayspots, but there’s little that can be done beyond what has already been suggested, which is to try to work with the Marines to have these Wayspots restored. And again, while we understand, not all of us here will be upset since we don’t live in these communities, or live in countries that already restrict Wayspots on or near military bases, since Wayfarer is global.

I hope you can take some time to ingest all of what has been suggested here and see if you can still get some of your Wayspots back. If you can’t get anymore back, be happy that some were returned, as some users don’t even have any on or near military bases in different parts of the world.
