Nominated a little library on a public sidewalk. Appeal got rejected

A little disheartened and quite honestly, giving up on taking the time to find and nominate new wayspots.

I found this hand-made little street library by a local park - it was actively being used by a passerby just before I photographed it. It is clearly visible, on a public footpath, and by all research is a worthy nomination that fosters engagement and enriches the community.

Can someone please help me understand why both the nomination and subsequent appeal by Niantic were rejected? The appeal was rejected based on “The submission is on private property which is not publicly accessible” despite a clear photo showing it overhanging the sidewalk.

See below…

Thanks in advance

Yarns & Yarns Little Library

Description

Yarns & Yarns is a little community street library offering free book exchanges for local residents. Passers-by are welcome to take a book, leave a book, or simply browse, encouraging reading and neighbourhood connection.**

Location

67 Murray St, Prahran VIC 3181, Australia

Supplemental Info:

This is a permanent, publicly accessible street library installed on the boundary fence and facing the footpath. It has been maintained at this location for several years and is clearly marked with the name “Yarns & Yarns” in fixed wooden lettering. The Street library is a recognised community point of interest that encourages literacy, sharing, and local interaction. People often borrow a book to read in the nearby gardens.

Appeal Notes

This street library is mounted on the fence facing the public footpath. It is accessible directly from public space and does not require entering private residential property. It is intended and used by members of the public to freely browse or exchange books from the footpath without opening a gate or entering the yard. Street libraries are recognised community points of interest that encourage literacy and neighbourhood interaction.

Niantic Note

Thanks for the appeal, Wayfinder! The nomination is on the property of a private residence, which makes it ineligible. Hence, we are unable to reverse the decision. We recommend you review the Wayspot rejection criteria before submitting any more Wayspot contributions: Rejection Criteria — Wayfarer Help Center

Reviewers provided these top reasons for not accepting this submission:
  • The submission is on private property which is not publicly accessible

Unfortunately, the outer boundary of SFPRP (single-family private residential property), as well as schools, is part of the private property. Anything that is attached to the outer boundary is not eligible.

If it is something in front of the boundary, on the pavement, with a one-inch gap between the POI and the fence/wall, that is OK.

Hello and welcome @honeywiu
Its not always easy to find the best area to post in, but this is better in Nomination Support so I shall move it there.

As the person above has explained according to the guidelines this is regarded as private residential property. This clarification explains it further.

Thank you for the quick and clear explanation. That helps clarify why it got rejected - so unfortunately, despite having a great reason to be a waypot, there isn’t really a possibility for it to become one due to the simple fact that it’s attached to the boundary wall.

Thanks again
