It is an old road bridge that has been replaced with a new bridge.
It gained “infamy” when it appeared in images during the “Battle of Orgreave”, 1984 Miners Strike.
You are no longer able to go over the bridge due to the fence at either end but these fences are placed between the brick pillars that are part of the bridge.
Therefore you can walk to the bridge, even touch it if that’s your thing
Not 100% confident it will be accepted as you cant go over the bridge, whats your opinions?
This wouldn’t meet the inclusion requirements for exploration, exercise or socialing. It’s just an infrastructre installation, even though it is obsolete.
Not sure I agree, it’s history with its involvement in the Miners Strike make it a place to explore (seen several youtube vids that include it), it also has footpaths leading around and up to it so I would consider that exercise?
My main concern was whether the fact that you can only walk upto the bridge and not across it would get a refusal?
Do you know if there are any websites that supports the references to the miners strike? If there is a significant relevant information that shows the relevant history, it may be acceptable. I am not entirely sure it does, just because it was used for the Miner Strike.
It would be a tough one, but there are citations that might make it eligible. I would suggest leading with the Battle of Orgreave early in the description and finding some good references to back it up. The bridge might also have some historic value in its own right.
I think you might struggle to establish that it’s pedestrian-safe though. I had a look on Google Maps - https://maps.app.goo.gl/HswqZRQZYCZi5X8n6 - and I don’t know how you would get close to it.
It’s an interesting nomination with some historical significance that people would not necessarily know and perhaps should find out about. I suspect it would be a tough one to get accepted though.
I think this is a classic case of place where there is some interesting history but the actual location is not interesting.
So going to this location is not really going to add anything.
There needs to be something at the location.
It would be great if there was an information board, especially if it could have photos and all the history around Orgreave and the role of the battle in the wider political context. Another alternative would be a mural about it especially if it could be a community project.
It would be great if you could reach out to maybe a local councillor or if it is still in existence the local miners welfare or if there are any local community art groups or a history society.
It looks like that there is reasonable access on foot. What a shame that they decided to not just use it for pedestrians to enable some respite from walking along beside traffic.
