Should I appeal this rejected nomination?

I’m at a loss here. How does this mural “lack uniqueness or cultural meaning”? I am considering appealing this decision but I’m hoping to get some insight as to why this nomination was rejected. Any advice/tips would be appreciated, because I was under the impression that this would be easily approved by reviewers. In the attached photos, I’ve included a Google Maps image that depicts the entirety of the mural.

Location and pedestrian seems ok. Personally i would approve it. Is it rejected by “team” or “community”?

This might be a hard one to get pass ML and the community. These typically aren’t meant to be permanent, but this one has been around for several years, at least since November 2020 on Street View.

I also wonder if you could try to get a better orientated photo by taking this in landscape instead of portrait, which may get more of the mural in the photo. There is no requirement to submit just portrait photos for Wayspots, so this may be better in landscape to get more of the mural than just a little part in portrait. Here’s an example of a mural I submitted, and I took the photo in landscape to best get the entire 4 parts of the mural into frame, and have less background/foreground:

Yesterday, it was “under review” with the niantic logo, so I’m assuming Niantic reviewed this one.

I was considering that as well, but it is rather difficult to get a good landscape shot as it is a pretty busy street and usually there are cars parked along that street (blocking the mural) during regular business hours. It’s possible to get one at night, but I’m not sure how the mural would photograph at night.

There are 2 addresses in question. The nomination is at a SFPRP (6 Garfield Ave) several blocks from the beach. The Google maps address at 237 Ocean Ave. is closer to the actual location. I hope this was simply a GPS “error” and not an intentional misplacement. I’ve had that happen to me as well. That’s why I always check the GPS coordinates that are in the nomination email and withdraw it if they are wrong.

Even at the angle you took it as, you can still get a better landscape photo. And nighttime photos are allowed, as long as the POI can be seen clearly.

This is on a fence next to a sidewalk that protects pedestrians from the nearby rail line. There isn’t SFPRP here. Yes, I saw that post that was deleted.

I did a quick search but didn’t see anything. Is there any article you can link that explains this is intended to be permanent or won’t be removed within the year?

I don’t think better photos are necessary. I think find information to support permanence and the story you provided in the description and appeal that.

Honestly it all looks fine to me.

On the main photo, 1:1 is best in my opinion because of the way it will get cropped by the games. You can use a different ratio for the supporting photo, but I think it’s good as it is.

I would simply try resubmitting it and hoping that the redcoats don’t get to it.

You should definitely submit an appeal. You may want to include the following link -
https://www.nbcboston.com/multimedia/photos-the-people-and-places-of-revere/2240323/ - which will take you to a November 2020 article that includes a photograph of this mural. This at least evidences that the mural is permanent.

The designated location is almost certainly correct, although I am concerned that it is somewhat off to the side of the railroad tracks. The mural was painted on the fence of a railroad line and has existed since 2020. We do not know why the team rejected this mural. Incidentally, when I apply for such artwork, I will research in detail who the creator is, his/her style, where he/she is from, where he/she works, etc., and then I will write a description with only the necessary information.

I have previously raised the bug that whenever a team rejects a submission, the reason for rejection is always displayed as “The submission lacks uniqueness or historical and cultural meaning.” However, I do not know how the investigation has progressed since then. The team rejected it, surely for a different reason than the one displayed.

I really don’t see what is wrong here.
The photo could definitely be better, but it’s good enough.
There is no rule that a submission needs to be perfect.
It’s been there for years so it’s clearly permanent.
Too many negatives is likely to get a rejection so try to have a good photo and full description so it doesn’t score too low.
But this should have passed.
I would appeal.

I agree, I cannot see any reason this should not have been accepted- I think the Niantic/Scopeley reviewers made an incorrect decision.

Its a stunning piece of art that is clearly in a safe and public area. I hope your appeal decision is quick and accepts it

Quick update—I submitted an appeal last night and included the link provided by @TheGallopingCat in my write-up. The appeal was approved within a few hours and the Wayspot is now live in game. Thanks to everyone for their input!
