Should there be a medal/badge for getting Wayspots approved?

I can see multiple sides of the fence.

  1. You will have the seasoned nominators who can achieve the badge in next to no time.
  2. There will be people who want to submit but don’t have anything to nominate.
  3. There will be people who wouldn’t care and won’t chase it.
  4. Once people get to know about the badge, it could (and most likely will) lead to a flood of coal submission.
  5. Will the badge be retrospective (i.e. take into consideration the nominations that have been approved)?

There are others I could list, but my brain is on the verge of falling asleep.

I have nearly 1000 approved Ingress portals and I live in a village. Admittedly, that involves a lot of trail markers.

In Ingress the name of the agent responsible for the main photo is clearly displayed when anyone interacts with the portal, typically this would be the submitter unless another photo was added. That way other players can see the contribution you are making, which does at least mean a little kudos. You can see the player name in PoGo but it requires some drilling down.

Actually, I would like the player name to be displayed in both PoGo and Ingress if the player has accounts on both. At the moment it only displays the player name in PoGo if the wayspot was submitted in PoGo, same for Ingress.

This is exactly what I’m thinking. Perverse incentive situation created by a loop of the reviewer agreement medal and the accepted wayspot pokestop medal.

We’re supposed to rear livestock and remove cobras, not rear cobras!

So that I am not being seen as overly negative, I am not against the idea of a Wayspot Medal / Badge, but I wonder if this could be open to abuse.

If we did get an influx of bad submissions, that would be dealt with by (mostly) the ML though, and then any action that needed to be taken by more severe abuse could be done by the team.

I think there’s tools in place to prevent it going badly, but maybe the tools need to improve a little bit before it happens.

I’m not in favor of a medal for Wayspots accepted, because I think that would greater shift the divide between quality and quantity, but I would love love love to see more raw-data stats in Pokemon Go like Ingress has - record Excellent throw streaks, Pokestops/Gyms created, throw accuracy percentages, battles won/lost overall, etc. Ideally these stats could be exportable for bragging rights. For new badges, my priority would be keeping Ingress the same (they do badge levels and stats quite well already, I think) and adding a Gold Gyms badge to Pokemon Go. That would be much more fun!

I made this just for fun as a quick proof of concept after they discussed it on the podcast. Certainly the ideal is for anything like this to be baked in.
