Reward System for Reviewing Wayspots

Currently, there is little incentive for players to actively review Wayspots. I would like to suggest a simple reward system:
for every 10 approved reviews completed in Niantic Wayfarer, the player could receive 1 Rare Candy XL in Pokémon GO, or an equivalent reward in other Niantic games that rely on the Wayfarer system.

This would encourage more players to participate in reviews, improving the overall flow of approved nominations and keeping the database up to date.
Additionally, increasing the number of valid Wayspots would benefit Niantic by attracting new players and promoting greater engagement with all Niantic titles.

While i like the idea. It will make people rush to spam review. I dont think thats gonna happen

Welcome! I love the idea and enthusiasm! I think “gamifying” Wayfarer would be a fun addition.

Have you taken a look at the Roadmap?

One thing I’m worried about, though, is too much incentive for such a high reward as PoGO Candy XL could lead to rushed reviewing and potentially poor experiences - for submitters not getting appropriate responses and for reviewers who don’t take time to understand, rush, and get cooldowns or stuck in poor ratings.

Do you have ideas on how to handle that?

I think that even as things are now, the quality of the reviews won’t really change, because it depends a lot on each reviewer’s attitude. When someone becomes a reviewer, they’re already aware of the terms established by Niantic — so if a person reviews things carelessly, in a rush, or without following the guidelines properly, I don’t think adding more rewards will change that. But adding more rewards would be nice for those who actually evaluate things correctly.

Did I read correctly that your suggestion is to give rewards for approving? Not for agreeing?

Proper rewards for high quality reviewing would be amazing!! Upgrades used to be very useful, necessary even, but nowadays things go through very fast even un-upgraded in my area, so they offer no incentive.

The in game medal in Go is set extremely low at platinum with only 1500 agreements needed, so now what? Reviews don’t really have any incentive.

So I absolutely love this idea, albeit I would say the rewards should be only offered for agreements while maintaining a good or great rating (similar to the criteria for progress towards the in game agreement badge). This could help ensure that reviews are done to a good standard

I get that we all want more rewards for what we’re already doing :upside_down_face: The question is: if nominations are already going through quickly, why would the company need to offer more to motivate or incentivize reviewers?

That is actually a really good point. Never thought about it that way.

We keep reviewing, even if there is almost no reward.

Maybe we should all hold a big break until we get more rewards😄

You need to know that Wayfarer and PoGo are completely different teams.
And understand that this should not be proposed to Wayfarer, but to PoGo.

I understand that some of you are being sarcastic, so I’ll be sarcastic too…
Since reviewing is already considered a reward, I’ll just stop reviewing altogether — after all, in my region I already have all the Wayspots I need. I won’t bother reviewing to help other areas; I barely leave my own region anyway, so I’ll just stay in my comfort zone.

I was not being sarcastic. That is how I read your suggestion. I wanted more information. Apologies if it came across as sarcastic. I do think that some people are too inclined to reject, and was going to ask how we could encourage people to accept if acceptable.

I want to assert my rights not just for Pokémon GO.

How will you handle other games like Pikmin and Monster Hunter NOW?

There are people here who don’t play Pokémon GO.

Sorry if I misinterpreted your comment. What I think is that I don’t believe this will encourage bad reviews — that already happens regardless of whether there are rewards or not.
To me, having rewards would be interesting to motivate those who stay in their comfort zone to help others who barely have even one Wayspot where they live. This would not only benefit current players but also attract new ones, since there would be more Wayspots and a more active community helping with reviews.

And keep in mind that even if one person gives a bad review, the final decision depends on multiple reviewers, which improves the chances of a Wayspot being viable.
Also, when I mentioned rewards, I was referring to Pokémon GO, but they could vary depending on which Niantic game the person plays — as long as it uses the same Wayspot system.

oh, got it. you meant helping others by reviewing, even if you don’t personally need upgrades anymore, not just a reward for accepting. i love this sentiment.

Exactly — because honestly, it’s pretty annoying to take time out of your day to review Wayspots. If there were at least some kind of reward, it would make the whole thing a bit more gratifying.

Good Idea! I’ve been playing Go since 2020, so I really think this is a good idea.

So someone who plays all 3 games can get triple the rewards? (Not suggesting it’s a bad thing, just pointing out there might be some perceived unfairness… just something to think about)

Only play Pokemon go so aware that rewards could be codes for the online store, not sure if the other games have a similar system. If so maybe you “Claim” your reward and it asks which game you want it for?

In regards to the idea, I wouldn’t say no but I wouldn’t stop reviewing if they don’t. IMPO its a “whatever happens” scenerio…

Can we throw in OPR live medal into this challenge rewards discussion?
