There are two wayspot categories named "Swimming Pool" - cannot distinguish during review

There are two distinct wayspot categories named “Swimming Pool” - one under “Outdoor Sports” and one under “Indoor Sports”. This is not necessarily a problem when submitting or adding additional categories during review, but if a submission is tagged with both categories it is impossible to distinguish between them during review to reject the inaccurate one.

Suggested solution: Also show the category group along with the name in the category review box, as mocked up below:

I think that one is correct.

The stadium is more for a proffesional grounds including the stands etc.

The Field can be used for the one at the local park…

But those words don’t indicate inside or outside. The field is just the place where someone plays the game of football. A stadium is a large structure that includes a field but also includes seating for the audience, bathrooms, food stalls, etc. It can be open to the outside or enclosed.

Fields can exist almost anywhere. A stadium is a specific location.

This is a stadium

This is also a stadium

This is a nice, but simple field in a park

Ok, well, IMO the solution is to remove the indoor/outdoor tags from swimming pool and soccer field. I think football field is the one that got it right. I would push to get rid of categories completely.

100% agree! they cause so much confusion when explorers think a category means it is eligible!

So many times I (and others) have to explain that to people.

I don’t think they should go entirely. But I think it shouldn’t be part of the submission process. Let the system assign a category and if needed, people can use one of their 400 Location Category Edits (at least on Pokémon GO) to add a category to the Wayspot later.

My personal view is that the categories are just a nuisance.
The pictures shown as examples are of American football fields, my football fields don’t look like that :joy:

The categories have always meant absolutely nothing to pokemon go players. They clearly meant something to Niantic, which I can understand as they were gathering data to use for other purposes.

For submitting, it was always a mild irritiation when submitting in pogo vs ingress, but only a mild one (“rail” is a quick way to find Trail Marker ).

When reviewing I only find it a mild irritation as long as there is an acceptable category auto-suggested, but tedious otherwise. I’ve always been willing to accept both because it was Niantic’s system, their decision to ask for that data and not particularly onerous. Pokestop/gym scans however…

The number of times ive searched for the exact right category and then thumbled “Other” is waaaaaay too high.

Keep in mind that the categories were not created by Wayfarer, but a 3rd party. So, Wayfarer just decided to use them instead of creating their own categories, or just forgo them, like how they’re not needed in Ingress.

With Ingress split from Wayfarer, it’s up to Wayfarer to decide now whether or not to get rid of the categories. I wouldn’t mind, especially when I get a review with 6 categories chosen, but only 1 works. Even back when GSB was still being used, it didn’t always categorize correctly and would quite random.

I think Basketball Court is the same, too.
