Additional Information (if any):
The last service at the Charles St Methodist Mission Chapel and Methodist Church was conducted in 1986 at which point in time, the property was sold. It has not been used again as a church since - refer https://inherit.dplh.wa.gov.au/public/inventory/printsinglerecord/130606cc-2afa-4e94-93c3-91a7d8ab8bda
The property is currently used as a residential property - refer https://www.property.com.au/wa/west-perth-6005/charles-st/113-pid-7885116/ . Whilst this location is historical, the primary use remains SFPRP.
Is this a single family home?
It is a a large property has it been split into apartments?
This building is used as a private single family residence and has not been split into apartments.
Can you provide any evidence of this?
The streetview from 2024 (less than 2 years old, so a long time after you say the church was converted) does not provide anything that indicates SFPRP. To either side of the building are entrances to businesses.
That website you linked is not indicative, merely suggestive.
It is a Wayspot for a church. If it is no longer a church, does it matter what it is now?
Just that it is not a church?
If it is actually SFPRP/nursery/etc, then it would not be eligible as a wayspot. If it isn’t, then it is valid for exploration.
Certainly in the U.K. we use the term church to be the physical building no matter what the use. Obviously if it is in use as a nursery for example it wouldn’t be eligible.
what about repurposing? if it was a church and it isn’t, isn’t that enough?
ah should have read this first
I’d be happy enough with keeping it, since it is still a church building.
Another UK/US difference. The church is the congregation that meets there here.
Ah
For me, the clear distinction is between churches that have a distinct church-like building and those that don’t. The latter would definitely be valid for removal if the church closes, but the former are still eligible (just under exploration instead of exploration/social).
I am just going to put this statement from NianticAaron here about how to proceed when a church changes hands What is considered to be Repurposing? - #6 by NianticAaron
Please refer to the following link https://www.wa.gov.au/system/files/2024-11/map2_vincent_lps2_vincent_south_wes.pdf for the City of Vincent zoning map for this area
This property is zoned Residential. It is not zoned as being a Place of Worship.
The name sign, Remida, is basically a directional sign for a business that is located in a seperate building (i.e. different property as shown on zoning map) at the rear of the church building and is fully accessible from their own address at 1 Prospect Place, West Perth- refer https://www.remidawa.com
Unfortunately, that zoning map is not proof of SFPRP.
Even if it indicated that absolutely everything inside the zone is residential, it wouldn’t prove SFPRP.
Also, I notice that there is a business/social venture behind the church, inside the Residential zone, so being zoned Residential definitely does not exclude non-residential uses.
Thanks for the appeal, @BunchOfCarrots! We gave this a second look and decided to retire the Wayspot in question.
