What is considered to be Repurposing?

I was wondering whether (or not) there is a detailed article on what the Wayfarer Team considers to be an act of “repurposing”. I have tried to seek clarification under Niantic Help / Policy but have had no luck so far.

Trying to change the object connected to a Wayspot is considered repurposing.

For example, an existing mural (wayspot) has been painted over and replaced by a brand new mural.

If I was to submit a Photo Edit to update the wayspot photo to reflect the new mural then this would be considered to be repurposing.

The correct procedure would be to request the removal of the wayspot and then submit a new wayspot submission for the new mural.

No, that would not be repurposing. You can submit the image of the new mural if it has replaced the older one without getting it removed.

Not to hijack but when reviewing how is it known without very recent streetview what the most current mural is? I tend to skip mural edits, I see the same with the rotating art plinths where sculptures and statues change or Churches that tend to change hands frequently. I’m a fan of removal request and renominating, just is cleaner and less confusion.

You can vote as per the information available.

You can do that if you believe you do not have enough to make a choice.

That should be reported for removal or reported through the removals webform.

There’s no article, but that would be a nice thing to have. I’ve had questions about whether or not edits would be repurposing or not, and I still have to ask myself from time to time those questions, since I submit a good deal of edits.

If both images are obviously in the same location and 1 of them has been on Streetview for Years you can deduct that the other is the current mural. Also, it is often that the original was imaged a long time after it was created, especialy if created way before wayfarer. The new one is likely to be re-imaged soon after completion and it can be obvious which is the new one.

What do you suggest when the Title includes the name of the Mural. I know that we can do a Title Edit but is there a recommendation which should be done first?

We don’t have a preference. But in my experience a Wayfinder (not a moderator), I have found it useful to submit the image first.
