What is "lightship"?

I’ve searched around but can’t find much about it.

The Lightship database holds all the approved wayspots. This is the database that each of the Niantic games (Ingress, Pokemon Go, Pikmin Bloom, Peridot, and Monster Hunter Now) draw from to populate their unique game boards. Well with the exception of Power Spots in Pokemon Go. Another database was used for those.

Before the Lightship database existed, Ingress had been the master database. But since each game uses different inclusion rules this wasn’t the best option.

FYI, Lightship has been renamed, and is now the Niantic Spatial map. Since this name change hapoened at the end of 2024, you’ll most likely see both Lightship and Spatial map used.
