"Which picture does not meet the criteria" is a problem

Hello all,

I am writing to you all with a “frustration” (if you might call it that) that I’ve been having. I am hoping by creating this topic you guys can share your thoughts on this, and the wayfarer team might think it’s a good suggestion.

I have noticed from the start of using Wayfarer, that for some reason adding a picture to a wayspot is vastly different than changing a description or title. As we all know with suggested title or description changes the question asked when reviewing these is “What is the best title /description”. Which makes sense, cause things change, people make spelling errors, and in this way we are hopefully kept with the most accurate and interesting titles and descriptions. However for pictures they suddenly ask “Which picture does not meet the criteria”.

I think (and evidence from many existing wayspots show), that using this question makes for such an insufficient system. You see, many times all pictures do in fact meet all the criteria. However there is a big difference in quality and “beauty”/ camera angle/ etc. etc.

I see this resulting in many pokestops that have quite bad pictures as their cover picture (or even pictures that show something different entirely), they continously get new pictures added (probably because people see this ridicilously bad picture in game). This pokestop ends up keeping this original bad picture and has 5 or 6 or more pictures you can only see on Wayfarer map or by clicking “pictures” in game on the pokestop. Meanwhile all 5 or 6 of these pictures that are not the cover photo are way better at showing the pokestop, better quality etc.

I would suggest that for adding another picture to a pokestop we could be asked the same question as descriptions and titles “Which picture better fits this pokestop / is the best looking etc.”. And that the picture who wins this vote would be the cover picture. This way we’d actually end up with nice and up to date pictures for our pokestops.

As an extra suggestion which might avoid having a gazilion pictures with each wayspot maybe even add a limit by making the nr 2 and 3 favorite stay “in the system”. And the 4 5 6 whatever gets deleted. (Or make the max 5, or 10 or whatever the wayfarer team thinks is a good limit looking at storage space).

I’d like to hear your thoughts on this. Or if I am just the only one bothered by this

Hello and welcome @Benignooo

Interesting point about the pictures and I’m sure there will be different views.

On a practical level you can request the removal of a poor photo eg obvious people, licence plate, too blurry or dark, or not obviously about the subject…..
By using the help bubble on the wayfarer site

Thanks! I will do that for sure for a few pokestops in my area with obviously bad pictures. I also am still interested to hear opinions on this suggestion though. As I feel the current way of “reviewing photos” with in-game likes (which is barely used as far as I know) feels a bit inefficient and outdated.

I like the general idea.

Reviewers are currently asked which photos are OK and which ones aren’t. They aren’t told that the photos they reject will be kept if they are existing photos, as the photo review is actually “is this new photo OK” despite looking like “are all the photos OK”.

This could be kept, but also ask reviewers which is the best photo for representing the wayspot. Doesn’t remove junk photos, but does allow the main photo to be changed.

My thoughts on this: No.

I like the current system and as many photos as people care to submit! Some Wayspots with multiple photos depend on those “likes” to rotate seasonal photos, to showcase specific elements of the object, to show off holiday decor…all kinds of reasons! The “thumbs” feature is quite commonly used in my various social groups, and there are even social media groups dedicated solely to “liking” photos from gifts. I’d rather leave photo curation in the hands of the community than impose automated restrictions on decidedly subjective content elements.
