The key is the trail not the marker. The onus is always to demonstrate that this is an official route someone can follow. I suspect if someone wanted to fake a whole trail they would do so. Should be easy enough to deal with. Sticker markers that come with a proper source that they are actually on an official trail should be fine. No source, no acceptance.
