Why? Just why? Why are other players’ areas so densely populated with PokéStops and Gyms, while I only have one?

There can be several reasons why those pictures of dense clusters of gyms exist.
It can be because of sponsored locations including ones for events.
The ones circled for example show the pink base of a sponsored stop.
They can be due to past malicious location edits that caused these clusters to be formed against the rules.
And sometimes the way things line up allows it to happen.

It’s all based on splitting the world into imaginary cells.

It can be frustrating when you see dense areas that shouldn’t exist and your own area is sparse. There is however no connection between the two. The false populated areas should be reported and you can ask for assistance with finding eligible things to submit for your area.
This doesn’t occur through sponsored stops or accidental lining up of cell boundaries. This happens through abuse - getting wayspots approved and then moving them into a dense area.
Same with this one. it’s possible for a couple of the gyms ot be sponsored, but nowhere near enough to explain this.
Just wanted to add that this would have been done in the past and should not be able to be forced anymore with changes that have been made to the edits process.
Also to add, some of these look like very old screenshots.

I hope so and wondered about that, but wasn’t looking closely enough. Clusters like this should have been corrected by Niantic a while ago.
