Seeing a few posts where people are getting banned / Suspensions for nominations. Some may be fair and justified. However, is this a message to us not to submit / nominate stuff close to major events in case we get a suspension?
I think you are being paranoid. I think we are seeing more posts about bans because of people trying everything to get them lifted before the event. I don’t think there is anything to worry about if you are following criteria in all your Wayfarer related endeavors, and not attempting game manipulation.

You are being paranoid. 2300+ wayspot and edit submissions, without a single warning because I don’t try to abuse the process. This will be true for most wayfarers, because most wayfarers are just submitting legitimately.
Deliberately abusing wayfarer is not something you should do coming up to a major event, but then you shouldn’t do it at any other time either.

Are more people getting warnings / suspensions are just more reporting it due to the big events.
No reason for Niantic / “Scopely Explore” to be harsh or try to rush through them to get bans in before the event when they are likely going to lose money on people buying raid passes etc.
Please stop fearmongering. If you really pay attention to each case, very few of these suspensions are overturned. That is because the actions were actually violations of the rules. People who submit based on the real rules of Wayfarer, not just what they see others get away with or what their local PGO players tell them are the rules, have absolutely nothing to worry about.
