Wayspot Title: Ancienne Fontaine à eau potable - Jardin de la Médiathèque
Location: 48.909554, 2.245584
City: La Garenne-Colombes
Country: France

I would like to appeal this wayspot removal.

This wayspot is an old decorative fountain located in the new Jardin de la Médiathèque inaugurated by the town mayor on December the 14th, 2024.
You can see below several internet links attesting this new garden existence.

This wayspot has been accepted by the community, indeed it’s located in a public garden, a place to gather with friends and family. This fountain will be quite useful in summer when it’s quite hot to quench oneself thirst.

Unfortunately streetview being not up to date it’s not possible to see it. You can see below a GPS map screen in which you’ll be able to see the realty of this wayspot.

The Community has decided this wayspot meets Niantic criterias, this wayspot exists.

Mod edit: removed game-based references and accusations.

Salut et bienvenue, I have removed gameplay references and accusations from this post. Please note that this is not relevant in appeal posts and will not help your case at all.

On a less moderatorial note, my suspicion here would be that the issue here is not so much the presence or absence of the object, but its overall eligibility. Old != historic, and drinking fountains from the Bayard brand are omnipresent enough that they can be seen as generic infrastructure. The focal point and interesting place to gather with friends and family, as you mention, is actually the park, not the drinking fountain. The distinction between “fontaine ancienne” and “new park” is also not entirely clear here, presumably it can’t be that ancient if it was just installed.

My advice would therefore be to either focus your arguments and proofs on showing how it is different from all other drinking fountains in the French urban landscape, either nominate amenities in the park instead if you are unsuccessful.

Hi Xenopus, Thank you for you moderative action and your comments quite clear indeed. This material is originally creates as you’ve mentionned it by Bayard and are public places curiosity especially in the towns of Lyon and Grenoble in early 1990"s. There appear in other towns in the middle of the 1990’s There are different mecanisms. The one displayed has a push button mecanism. On the contrary of what you’ve penciled down this fountain will be a place to gather in summer. I don’t know if you live in France but here the weather is quite hot in summer and yes having an alike fountain in a garden where we (young and old people)could gather to slake our thirst and to use fresh water is a great thing. This material located in this garden embellish it, as you can see in this not so bad picture. Joking aside i understand if the removed wayspot is not restored this kind of fountain anywhere will be eligible for a removal request.

A place people will gather does not make it a great place to gather. The intent of the object is for people to be able to grab a drink and go about their way.

One removal/appeal does not set precedense to other waypoints. The decision is for this specific case and should not be carried over to other instances.

Before judging the generic nature or not of the wayspot I think that we must first see its usefulness, drinking water is becoming rare and expensive, cities are not inclined to distribute it for free. It’s the case here. It’s one of the rare water point, even the only one in the town accessible publicly and for free.

Personally I can go play for hours in very unfavorable weather conditions, so when it is almost 40 ° C while being far from home and without any shops nearby I’m very happy to come across a public fountain that allows me to rehydrate and I do not think I am the only player in this case.

Knowing where the locations of drinking water fountains are is not only useful for oneself but also for others. A homeless person with his dog recently asked me where he could find drinking water and I was unable to answer while it was vital for them; if this fountain could have been in the game at that time I could have been able to told him. There is no map that lists drinking fountains, having it in the game allows people to know where it is and allows you to rehydrate if necessary.

As for the generic character, I do not see these fountains everywhere, I do not see any other in this town, I do not see any others nearby, I do not see any in all cities. It is not a simple watering hose but a fountain with a particular style, the city has chosen this fountain because it’s aesthetically worked out. You can see on this wikipedia page that these fountains are called “curiosités des lieux publics” (curiosities of public places) Borne-fontaine Bayard — Wikipédia

I do not know the reason of its removal, I can only presume and I think it’s a problem of location of this object, the park is new, the fountain too but on streetview we only see the old parking lot which gave way to this new place.

I think you might be missing the “interesting place to gather” part in my post. I’m familiar enough to be a little skeptical of the claim that purposefully gathering around what are essentially utility objects is a fundamental French tradition.

It is entirely possible that other objects of the same type around you were also not eligible and should never have been accepted - existing wayspots should have no bearing on what you yourself submit.

Welcome to the forum - there is no need for further arguments passionately supporting the wayspot as the case by the OP has been made. This is now getting closed while we wait for staff feedback. Thanks all for your understanding.
