Appeal to restore wayspot of art installation

  • Wayspot Title: Luminous
  • Location: 37.68113048072386, -121.77156476702332
  • City: Livermore
  • Country: USA
  • Screenshot of the Rejection Email: no rejection email received, noticed the poi is gone in Pokemon Go (has not been moved, I checked nearby wayspots by submitting a new poi)
  • Additional Information: I submitted this poi a few weeks ago for an art installation. The wayspot image was for the plaque that had the artist’s name and a description of what the art installation meant:

The plaque is at street level, but the art installation itself is a series of metal wind chimes/bells with engravings on them and located on top of the commercial building directly above the plaque’s location. You can see both from streetview. Note that there isn’t a separate wayspot for both the plaque and the installation themselves.

My only guess is that someone went out of their way to remove this because they thought it was a duplicate of another nearby wayspot with “Luminous” in the title. If so, this is in error because there are two distinct art installations that are done by the same artist. The other nearby wayspot is called “Luminous Sculpture” and is for a ground installation. The wayspot that was removed has similar engravings as that one but is in a different spot and are giant wind chimes/bells instead of a grounded cylinder.

Please check the map yourself to see that this is a distinct poi and restore the wayspot.

I actually just noticed that streetview doesn’t show the plaque, which must have been installed after the most recent streetview sweep. My original supporting photo showed its location:

Not sure how this will be seen regards the criteria that you must be able to walk upto the actual location, there is an exception such as Murals that are high on a wall as long as you can get to the wall. This does look to be the case with this wayspot but I don’t have a say in it :frowning:

Personally, I would have tried to take an image of the actual art and maybe include the plaque in the 2nd image.

Good luck…

Yes but plaques for art installations themselves are valid wayspots as well, if there is not already a wayspot for the art, and the plaque is obviously at street level and accessible. In my opinion without the plaque the wind chimes up there wouldn’t be looked at because you wouldn’t be able to read the different languages engraved into it from down on the street. This is why I decided to submit the plaque as the main photo. If it gets restored I will submit additional photos of the chimes to avoid confusion in the future.

IMO: The plaque would be an anchor for the art. The Art would be the wayspot.

Personally, looking at Google Maps I think that the Art goes to the edge of the building and therefor the “Mural high on wall” exception should count here but again, it’s not my call.

The only other possibility is that the building owner has requested it’s removal.

Hopefully, someone from Niantic will reply sometime soon.

Just wanted to support you that I have done the same when the art is hard to capture in one photo.

I have since been able to get some nice photos to add to Light Passage, but not for Green Light.

Thanks for the support!

I hope wayfarer staff see this appeal soon.

Thanks for the appeal, @PhysicistJason We have taken another look but stand by our decision to retire the Wayspot in question.

We looked at this Wayspot again and have restored it. The Wayspot was initially retired as a duplicate but on closer inspection, we realized that the plaque is connected to a different object altogether. @PhysicistJason

Thanks for the reply. Can you help me understand why this was not a good wayspot to improve my contributions going forward?
